Even further evidence that the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff may not feel secure in their jobs, inside linebackers coach Clancy Pendergast is expected to leave the team to become USC's defensive coordinator.

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, Pendergast has resisted earlier courtships by the Trojans, but with the uncertainty of what will happen with the 49ers' current coaching staff following Sunday, he has reconsidered.

Pendergast, who is 48, was USC's defensive coordinator in 2013 and joined the 49ers coaching staff following head coach Jim Tomsula's hiring. He has also been a defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs, and the California Golden Bears.

USC head coach Clay Helton said today that he has spoken to Pendergast, but has not yet offered the defensive coordinator job to anyone.

There is a lot of uncertainty regarding the 49ers coaching staff, who have led the team to a 4-11 record this season. They have one final game this season, a matchup on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams at Levi's Stadium.

On Thursday, 49ers defensive coordinator Eric Mangini was asked about job security, saying that he believes that they will find out more fairly soon after the season ends.
