Former San Francisco 49ers head coach and the current coach of the University of Michigan, Jim Harbaugh, joined 95.7 The Game on Tuesday morning to discuss recently retired Joe Staley.
The former offensive tackle was the first player Harbaugh met after being hired by the 49ers in 2011. The two spoke with each other for about 30 to 45 minutes before Harbaugh's introductory press conference.
"One of the best players in NFL history," Harbaugh said on the Joe, Lo and Dibs show. "Congratulations to him and everything he's accomplished."
Harbaugh coached Staley for four seasons and admired his toughness and dedication to the team.
"He played every game," Harbaugh said when asked what it was like working with Staley. "A consummate pro, but every single game. I think he played every game available 2011, 12, 13, and 14.
"And he also threw the greatest block I think I've ever seen, and that was in the playoffs against New Orleans on Alex Smith's great touchdown run. But he's the best offensive lineman I ever coached."
Harbaugh went on to praise Staley's locker room presence, sense of humor, work ethic, and intelligence.
"A lot of great qualities," he added.
