San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after the team's 28-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks and discussed the injuries from the game.
Here are Shanahan's updates:
- Kicker Robbie Gould suffered a groin injury during the pre-game. He did not play.
- Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf injury and did not return.
- Center Alex Mack sustained a hand injury but returned.
- Tackle Trent Williams sustained a shoulder injury and did not return.
- Defensive end Arden Key suffered a stinger and returned.
The 49ers initially reported that Williams suffered an elbow injury and that Key was being examined for a head injury. Those were the only differences from in-game team-issued updates.
Shanahan discussed Garoppolo's injury at length.
"He got hurt sometime in the first half," the coach said. "He said he got stepped on. I'm not sure which play. But he played for a while with it. He didn't think it was that bad at the time. Then about a minute before halftime ended, and trying to get it going, he just couldn't push off it. So, right at the end of halftime, we realized he couldn't go."
Shanahan was asked if the team believes it is a bruise or a contusion as opposed to a strain.
"We don't know yet," Shanahan answered. "That's what we've got to check up on here after this game."
That could mean rookie Trey Lance, who started the second half, could get his first NFL start next weekend against the Arizona Cardinals
Added Shanahan: "Hopefully, Jimmy's better, and not as bad as we think, but Trey is here for a reason. You want to give him the time. You want him to be fully ready. But you don't always have that luxury."
There is also some concern surrounding Williams' injury. The offensive lineman looked to be in a lot of pain as he was carted into the locker room.
"I'm concerned," Shanahan said. "For Trent to leave with a shoulder injury and not return, I hope it's alright but that's all I know about it."
Tight end George Kittle played in the game despite dealing with a calf injury and being listed as "questionable."
"I know he made it through the game, which is encouraging," Shanahan said. "But he's done that before, and something's been worse later. I know he was banged up going into that game. I'm not sure what happened exactly on that play. It didn't hold him out, so he was able to come back in. But we'll see when they clear up [everything] in there."
