Depends on what we do with Nate, imo.
If he stays at CB, than I think we can get away with just adding a decent nickelback in FA. There seems to be several of those available just about every year (guys like Strickland, Green, Bly, etc).
If we cut Nate or move him to FS than I think CB becomes a bigger need. Just look at what happened to us this year - we lost both projected starters at CB and have been starting our projected 3rd & 4th CB's for a number of games now.
Thank God Spencer & Brown are players, otherwise our season would likely have gone much worse than it already has. I would welcome drafting a guy like Haden if we lost Nate for this very reason.

Is CB really a need?

The Niners need a safety with speed more, but they could also use one more CB IMO. Clements is still a question mark because of his salary numbers and Tarrell Brown hasn't exactly lit it up since he was promoted to the starter, extension or not. I still like the idea of Javier Arenas and Perish Cox in the 3rd who can also return kicks.

I don't think we should draft a CB in the later rounds for depth either. We can easily get a good CB for cheap in free agency, which we've been good at (Walt Harris, Dre Bly).
So would you be happy or upset if we didn't draft a single CB in the draft?
If we cannot sign a corner in FA, then its a major need. Drafting Haden and moving Clements to Safety is a good option.

The talk of moving Clements to FS seems very unrealistic at this point. He's one of the worst CB in the league against the deep ball. Do you really want him as your last line of defense? Not me.
Clements can only play CB. If he moves anywhere, it'll be inside as a nickel CB. He's great underneath and especially in run support. We don't want him at safety.
I could see Goldson moving over to SS, but that's about it.

Then who would we draft for FS, especially assuming that Berry is already drafted?

Clements salary is about to escalate prohibitively. I'm not sure of exact numbers, but I'm guessing he's got one year left tops before economics has him looking for work elsewhere. Haden looks like a pretty reasonable selection to me.

What are the chances of Walt Harris and Dre Bly coming back next year?

I agree. I think Clements is a candidate to renegotiate a new deal with San Francisco and stay on as a CB. He is clearly not the game changer the 49ers signed him to be, but he can at least hold his own as an everyday starter. What S.F. needs is a ballhawk safety.

Not only is CB a need but it is a MAJOR need. The Niners need a passrusher and a great corner. That can elevate us to a premier defense. Joe Haden is my choice with our first pick.
