The Ones That Got Away

Was watching an interview at the combine with McKivitz and he mentioned playing guard in the senior bowl, and that some teams were even asking him if he can snap. I am confused about what the 49ers want to do with him. KS and JL mentioned that one of the options for the draft was to move back to 14 and get that 4th rounder and keep it for McKivitz. He was their target O lineman, even without the Trent Williams deal. They were not planning on taking Wirfs. So if the Williams trade did not materialize, and there was serious questions about that as the Redskins were talking to multiple teams, McKivitz was always the backup plan. To me that implies that the viewed him as a possible LT or at least RT. Others think he is moving to guard. Maybe he is just seen as valuable depth across the line, while being a developmental prospect for a certain position.

His film is spotty at tackle to me. He plays way too tall, with his hands low for way too long, and is routinely burned by the speed rush dipping around him. 4 years starter with a ton of experience, but does not look refined at all. Obviously that leaves room for improvement with some real coaching, but I'm not seeing a starting LT. Not sure about a starting caliber guard either, and he is more of a neutralizing blocker. He seals the edge well, but he is not a hog molly coming around and locking on to guys and driving them back 5 yards. He has the right temperament and has some athletic abilities to move around in space and a zone scheme will cover up some of his deficiencies and play to his strengths. I do think he will be functionaly at guard, but I am really curious about his ability at center.

My post about the one that got away was going to be about Bryce Hall, but I abstained because O Line was the bigger need. Not sure if Hall would see this field this year. I'm betting McKivitz does. Just hoping what the 49ers saw in him can be maximized.

Can't speak to their thought process before Williams but once they got Trent they have him pegged for guard all day. I'd imagine they see him as the cheap replacement for Tomlinson when his deal is done.

I'm happier with Kinlaw and Aiyuk than Lamb and Blacklock tbh.

I just think Aiyuk fits this offense perfectly even if Lamb is the better overall WR.

I've said for year's we needed to upgrade our returner as well and Aiyuk > Lamb at it.

I think Lamb will turn out to be the best receiver from this class, but I'm more than happy with who we drafted. I believe Both players have potential to be stars for us.

Agree to disagree. Kinlaw was the right pick.

Lamb benefited from facing a bunch of lousy defenses in the Big 12.

IMO, they'll be trying to get McKivitz to play Guard.

This kid is a freak and Wilson might utilize his ball skills and versatility and length. I like what Schneider has done for my Seahawks. 49ers better hope they can keep pace.

Lamb was such an unnecessary pick for the Cowboys unless they plan on letting Gallup walk in 2 years.

Could care less if you disagree. Post your guys, answer the question of the OP.

I'll post what I want.
Driscoll from Auburn

Only had 2 holding calls his SR season, and allowed only one sack in the SEC.

Would have been a center or guard at Auburn ( did both in practice) but got pushed out to tackle due to lack of depth at tackle and still had great performance.

He gives 100% on every down and would have been a great 49er. He beat the odds a tad and went in the 4th, many viewed him as a 5th rounder due to size ( he was listed over 300....but he would be the first to tell you he walks around roughly at 290)

Very intelligent and graduated 2 years ago, stayed at Auburn to play ball.

Classic example of a dude who is an over achiever due to his brain, and effort.

I think the Eagles saw what they wanted in him as they were scouting Prince Wanogho
Ruggs was my big one but that is canceled out by Aiyuk.

Matt Hennessy C Temple is the one that stings. Some of you folks made a thread about him in the draft forum and I began researching him. End of the day I wanted him. I think he would have been perfect for us. Obviously the acquisition of Trent Williams makes that seem like a distant memory. The fact he went in the 3rd also eased the pain because we had no shot. I was hoping we'd get him in the 4th with the 4th we got in the trade down with TB.

None of it matters now. I'm very happy with the draft. Seems like a consensus B grade for us from the "experts." I have moved on to praying for the season to actually happen because I see absolutely no reason whey this team can't compete for the NFC title again next season.

For me, there are a few standouts:

Jaylon Johnson, CB
My number one CB target. Didn't expect him to get major playing time in year one, but would open up the draft for us big time next year.

Bryce Hall, CB
While I like the player, I'm not nearly as bummed about missing the player (like Johnson), so much as I am about the manner in which it happened. I woke up early to see if there is any early trade action to get the niners in the mix, especially with a player like Hall dropping. I finally gave up hope and decided to take my dogs for a walk. Literally, the moment I get back and sit on couch, the niners have traded and are on the clock! Holy s**t, were getting Bryce Hall, LFG!!!! Wait, who the @#$& is Colton Mcs**tvitz?!??

Bryan Edwards, WR
This takes the cake for me. The number one heartbreak, the one that got away. Dude had a <18 breakout age, and is going to be a stud in the NFL. This one, I think, is going to hurt for a long time.

Bryan Edwards ): remains to be seen if the Raiders will use him, but he had an excellent end to today's game. I comped him to Allen Robinson during the draft process and he was my #1 draft crush. Sad to see him in silver and black.
I'm still mad that we didn't draft PK Evan MacPherson of Florida... I know how good Gould is, but MacPherson could have been our PK for the next 10 years..

I agree and I hope they do let him walk!!! For me though, it will always be Vince Wilfork, I know he's not part of the Shanny era but yah WIlfork will always be the one that TRULY got away. My second pick who got away would definitely have to be Calvin Ridley. Sure McGlinchey has been decent and it was a need I guess, but so was a playmaking WR. Shanahan missed hard on this one, only because he knew WR was also a need and he picked one of the biggest 2nd round bust in the 2018 draft. I think he could've traded back up for Ridley no doubt!!!
