Gordon as BPA but I think Niners would take Pitre as a slot/nickle DB

I know the secondary jumps out as a huge need but we can find starting caliber DB's in the 3rd and 4th.
we must have as solid of an Oline for Lance as possible to set him up for any success and Zion showed he can handle OC at the Senior Bowl and fared well without much training at the position. Mack may not come back and retire and regardless he is ancient and OC is a massive need for us either way. The FA market at OC won't help us much, Jensen will be paid higher than we can afford. Worst case Johnson starts at RG and Mack plays 22' and Johnson begins his integration.
Gordon is a great DB but are we benching Ambry Thomas? I'd rather wait till the 4th or 5th and take a developmental player to groom to be the 3rd DB. Marcus Jones would fill a need at nickel corner with good ball skills and can be an electric returner.
pitre makes a case to be the selection because Tartt will probably be gone via FA and Pitre is a very cerebral S that can come into camp and win that spot.
Edge is a deep position and we could land a solid rotational player in the 3rd or 4th.
How many "developmental" CB's have worked out for us recently? EMan and Donte Johnson?
We're far better at drafting "developmental" O-Line, D-Line, Linebackers, and Running Backs. So positions we just need to address in FA or draft super high.

Thomas and Lenoir will be fine I think. The Niners run an extremely zone heavy scheme so the corners are probably the least important guys on the defense.

Problem with the CBs has been the injuries, bringing in street FAs during the season to start. Keeps the d from gelling, would like to have solid depth here

Boy, howdy. The Niners' offense is way behind its defense. To those picking defense first, did you watch the playoffs? The Niners already have three proven starters at CB in Mosely, Thomas, and Verrett. They also have Williams and Lenoir (drafted last year). At safety we have Ward, Hufanga, and Tarvarius Moore, as well as Tartt. The right side of the OL is subpar. The backups are unproven. The Niners will have a very young, very inexperienced though talented QB starting next year. All that points to upgrading the OL first and foremost.

If we get Gilmore in FA I´ll want a speedy edge-rusher in the 2nd round.

If the O was way behind the D it was because the QB was gargabe.

Nothing wrong with any off these comments, pretty much on point.
I still want to see us strengthen the secondary and oline, we have good pieces on both units but not quite there yet.

We need to see them start an entire season before we make that judgement. At this point in his career, Witherspoon looked solid too.
I don't think Ryans wants to be a zone team. The way he was playing man press on third downs early in the season makes me believe he wants to have a few physical man-to-man shutdown corners.

I mean shutdown corners don't really exist anymore. I'm sure he would like to be able to play more man though and blitz at times.

While I agree with your thought process, Verrett cannot and should not be relied upon as a starting corner because of his injury history. Thomas looked good in a very small sample size, and Mosley is a free agent. I don't think a *starting* cornerback is necessarily as big a need as some people think, but Gordon would be, in my opinion, so far and away the best player available at a key position where you would definitely like to have a cost-controlled high-level starter for the next four years.

Verrett, Williams, and Tartt are all scheduled to be unrestricted free agents. Moore is also coming back from a torn achilles and shouldn't really instill confidence in anyone. I think DB is our top need but if the value at edge or OG/C is better then one of those should be the pick.

O line. Protect the young qb first priority.
