Dashon Goldson is the most romanticized safety the Niners had over the last 20 years. Dude was worse than Tartt or Ward in coverage.
Ward & Tartt are typically good in keeping their assignments. He's not bad, but he's also not game-changing.

Ultimately though, I don't think Tartt is going to command a huge contract to re-sign. Bring him back for another year, but look to upgrade.

It all depends on his price and what we can afford. He's a luxury at this point since he tends to miss a lot of time. Huf is the future at that position and more of a ball hawk and player who knows where to be.
Ward is staying because he's so versatile and makes plays and is more reliable. Ward costs big $$ though if you look at his averages.
Great player. Go back and watch the Aaron Jones play.

Oh yeah, Ward's locked-up long-term. He's definitely staying.
I'm curious about Hufanga in Year 2 next year. He seems very instinctive.

I'm not sure if anyone remembers what life was like when ward and tartt were out...

Dashon had 14 Int in his 6 years here plus he was a thumper. I would take him in his prime over either one of those.

Goldson forced more turnovers and big plays, but I feel like he also had his share of poor coverages. Tartt/Ward don't have a lot of big plays, but are typically good at keeping their assignments.

In the Packers game where Demeco Ryans destroyed Rodgers with his coverages, a big part of that is Tartt & Ward being so fantastic with their assignments. Against the Rams, where Tartt dropped an easy INT in the fourth quarter... it hurts to see.

When Ward is out it hurts and it's noticeable. When Tartt is out no so much because he's out so often. That's the problem he really doesn't make a lot of plays to miss him

Games played / total games
2018. 8/16
2019. 16/20
2020. 7/16
2021. 18/21

Earlier this year we wrote him off and figured Huf would take over now, but Huf got hurt and I think Tartt sucked it up a bit more than normal because it's a contract year. He's going To be 30yesrs old in a position that's easier to draft for, and isn't a high paid roster spot.

He made less than $1M this year. Hufanga made almost that much.
We drafted his replacement. He is not coming back unless he takes a big discount. We have to use the money on other needs.

This. I'm sure we will get plenty of people defending them and saying turnovers aren't everything

With that attitude and logic, I guess touchdowns aren't everything or interceptions aren't everything and we could just throw out Jimmy Garoppolo as being very good or solid player even though oftentimes it's quite the contrary.

840k to $1.124M almost $1M guaranteed. I don't think he will get that this year unless there's a game bonus and until most of the roster is filled out.

Ward and Tartt are generally good at keeping to their assignments and limiting big plays. They typically don't have a lot of busted coverages and I think that's important.

Guys who take care of their coverage responsibilities are important. Josh Norman is a good CB-example. The guy's great at forcing fumbles. Not a good cover corner anymore and is a DPI machine.

Not gonna say forcing turnovers aren't important, they certainly are, but Ward & Tartt are serviceable and doing what needs to be done. Tartt is relatively cheap as well. Just had to point out that they're not garbage, but yeah, if we DO have an opportunity to upgrade, I'm all for it.
I believe it was during HALFTIME when I posted that this dude seem to not be focus.. .head not in the game.. and that INT was a big part of the L !!
