Williams is a 4th round pick and you don't usually let those guys slip to the PS. You lock them up on 4 year rookie deals.

Breida can easily land on the PS like most UDRFA do.
I also believe Mostert is still PS eligible.

Breida isnt going to the PS. Like Maiocco said yesterday, he has been outplaying Williams since the spring. His draft status is irrelevant if he is getting it done on the field.

Williams isnt going to the PS because they arent going to give up on a 4th rounder that they traded up for this early. He will get plenty of opportunities to show that he can be the guy.

Well I replied to someone's post and what my words meant is that he's a more likely candidate for the PS than Williams. Who I said was not going to the PS.
lol

Well if they keep 4 RBs sure. Lets see.
Scrappy runner. Fight for those yards inside. I like him
Man, compared to last yrs RBs at this point in time, it's like Christmas. We got a lot of talent at this slot and i sure wish at least one of them was a CB... but i can live wiht 4 really good choices at RB. Injury bug always gets factored in sometime during the season.

He'd be the only rookie RB that isnt injured to have his carries limited. You want your rookie RBs to get plenty of snaps, especially in this offense. It is pretty clear that Breida has passed him up, whether the issue is pass blocking or whatever with Williams, Breida appears to be situated as the #2.

Not when your rookie RB was HAND PICKED by the coach. like chaz said, i believe they already know what they have, and he will be a BIG part of the running game with this new scheme... keep him healthy...nothing more to see here in preseason

That doesnt mean a whole lot beyond Shanahan liking him during the pre-draft process. You can evaluate a guy on film and love the way he plays but the film doesn't show you everything such as heart and work ethic.

Coaches hand pick guys that turn out to be busts all the time. Bill Walsh handpicked Giovanni Carmazzi. How did that work out?

Williams might have been "hand picked" but Breida has been the better player going all the way back to OTA's.

This might make sense for a veteran back like a David Johnson. No team is limiting the carries of a 4th round draft pick because he is just too good to play in the preseason. That is straight up potato logic. You want your rookies getting in as many snaps as possible.

I am probably in the minority but i honestly like Matt Breida more then Joe Williams at this point, that might change as the season goes but as of right now i like how natural & smart Breida is with the ball & his receiving skills are excellent, not to shabby for a guy who rarely caught anything in college.

based upon the body of work so far, you can not be blamed for your thoughts. in any case the team has done a good job of rebuilding the run game and even if they do not want to admit it.. they did it because they know hyde is not the answer,. due to his kevin barlow jr persona and his injury history. making an excuse for hyde due to so called scheme is laughable in my opinion

Even if he does have a good Season i think its just to get a nice pay day i prefer to develop the young & inexpensive backs we have & use that money in other areas in FA to continue building the team. I am quite confident 2 things will happen this Season with Hyde being the featured back
1. He gets hurt 2. He continues to struggle eventually giving way to the youth & we end the disappointing Carlos Hyde era for good

Agree

He fights for every inch.
I'd give Breida the edge over Williams because he's a more well-rounded player. I think they both make the roster, but if I'm Hoyer, and something happens to Hyde, I want my RB to have the versatility Brieda has. From what I've seen, Matt is a better receiver and more adept at picking up the blitz. Hostert could well be an X factor. I know Shanahan likes Hightower's skillset, and his experience. Just haven't seen much of him. Could be they're protecting him for the regular season, who knows. Nice problem to have if you're Shanahan.

Agreed with everything Phoenix is saying. Nobody's saying Williams is going to the PS or not going to play or anything like that. Him not playing in the preseason is not normal and the reason isn't because he's blown the roof off with his play in practice or cause of risking injury. Thus far, Breida by all accounts in practice and actual preseason play has out played him. Draft position means nothing, the field of play does when it comes to who will be playing. This is a good thing guys, we may have found a gem in Breida. He AND Williams may very well be our future at the position
Knew this kid had something good to work with. Happy to see him doing well. By all appearances, he should make the team.

This all day ^ not sure what everyone is talking about Williams and breida, both are making the team and playing behind Hyde...I wouldn't be shocked if Hightower is gone or if they keep 4 RBs and only two TEs with juice now.

The whole saving him is crazy talk lol, he's a 4th rd pick, not our 1st rd pick that's we're trying to baby and by the way our 1st rd picks have both played a lot.
