We may be better off drafting EDGE within the first 3 rounds paired with resigning Willis. Otherwise, if Hyder is willing, we could sign him to the mid-level exception (~$2-3M salary, but only costs us $900k).

Hyder should just sign a long term deal with us for maybe $4Million per year and here it why...

He only plays well for Kocurek so if he signs somewhere else for say $7M guaranteed, he will underperform and be released for 2022. We will take him back under a $1.5 million prove-it deal and he will do well again and get another $7M from the next team. Rinse and repeat.

I'm just trying to simplify his life, and only half-kidding.

I know that's you John Lynch.

It takes two to tango, it seems like Hyder & K'Waun haven't had anything, same for most of the WRs(JuJu, Golladay, Samuel, Watkins, Hilton), also CBs like Sherm, King, and others. Crazy that Witherspoon & Thomas get deals before Hyder & K'Waun do.

I've got a theory on this one...

With the limited free agent budgets this year I'm guessing that most of the bigger name unsigned guys have already seen the best offer they were going to get and passed thinking it was too low. Witherspoon signed quickly while the average offer was higher, but now that funds are even more scarce, I think a lot of guys are going to "chase the market down" this year... way down. Lots of players pissed off at agents.

See it all the time in things like real estate when markets aren't skyrocketing. Get a good first offer, decline it holding out for more. Owner feels sick when first deal falls through and a better one doesn't immediately pop up and thinks to themselves they will accept a similar offer when it comes again. Next offer is lower and the owner declines remembering that they just passed up a better one. Repeat the cycle. With the limited pool of cash to pull from, this situation could get brutal. Sherm might have to play for less than Witherspoon!

Hahaha. Either that or an unemployable agent. Not saying which.
So, maybe I've missed some signings but isn't this the list of edge guys still available now that we're in the 2nd wave?

Kerry Hyder
Aldon Smith
Olivier Vernon
JaDaveon Clowney
Melvin Ingram
Ryan Kerigan

I wouldn't mind bringing back Aldon seeing that the value looks fairly low right now. We all saw what he did to the toots last year and what he's capable of when properly motivated.

Clowney is interesting but injury history is worrisome, same with Melvin Ingram, but we all know what the Chargers's line was like when they had a Bosa and Ingram.....just sayin. If he comes on a prove it deal? maybe.

Clowned will just go to the highest bidder and we're not that team. I would like Aldon tho, Ingram has dealt with injuries the last few seasons and Bernon is coming off a ruptured Achilles so that's a pass

Hyder or Aldon would be the most affordable. The rest would be overpaid because of their names, like AJ Green.

I thought Aldon plays 3-4 edge...would he be a fit?
Aldon for the redemption story....

It would be cool to see Smith come back and get double-digit sacks opposite Bosa. Has some Hollywood storyline in it.

In a lot of ways the wide-9 probably suits him well. He is strong and can contain while having a credible pass rush. Now I didn't watch him last year so just going off memory and seeing a few bits about him last season.

a 3-4 edge is essentially a wide 9 end, so yeah. Ford was a 3-4 edge. He'd be a great fit to replace Ford, IMO and doesn't seem to be commanding much attention.

Aldon played in a 4-3 in college. It doesn't really matter. 49ers have had many dudes since Saleh arrived and still do(Dee Ford, Samson Ebukam) that would classify as 3-4 edge by antiquated standards. It's 2021. If your DC can't utilize an effective edge rusher, he probably shouldn't be a DC.

Cowbo.ys ran a 4-3 last year and Aldon did just fan. Not to mention a lot of aldon sacks came in nickel packages where we had 4 guys on the field.
