People say this a lot and I seriously disagree. It tends to be forgotten that the defense was awful during that playoff run. In every game, the team fell behind early and had to play catchup. Kaepernick and the offense catching lightning in a bottle is what made that run possible. Had Alex started those games, I don't think that team even reaches the SB.

Oh, and my answer to the thread question is pre-injury Bert Jones.

And in the subsequent seasons Marino lost his running game and it was never really replaced. Dude would have been up for consideration as the goat if he had played for a team like the 9ers or cowgirls during that era. His arm accuracy and strength was off the charts. He carried the fins...and it proves to me that 1 player doesn't make a team.

cc forgot to say,,.... he was a bit nervous when they went to that no huddle which we did not expect but then the defense showed them where the bear s**ts... that team was maybe the best team we ever had. no offense to 89
