So you weren't watching the Niners from 2003-2010? Gore has gone up against stacked boxes his entire career because we were so bad at passing in between when Garcia left and Harbaugh arrived.

Play calling has to help the OL out! If they just tip the defense what they plan to do and try to power their way through it will be another long year. Power blocking is so dependent on having the best, strongest line...and is still dependent on being able to beat a stacked box. Having some stealth is really important. Roman had some ver good ideas, like the Wham Block, but after a few years other teams figured out how to beat his blocking schemes and the pass blocking was so bad, and under emphasized, the team couldn't counter the stacked boxes.

I dont disagree. How many times do you remember seeing D.Walker or WR run along the back side of the Oline and pop a squat before the ball was hiked. The horrible thing was that the run gap always ended up in the same place...

I know J. Martin was soft, but why is he retiring too? There must be something in the new stadium water that makes people want to quit.

I'm sure the Jonathan Martin retirement will also be attributed to the Niners. Hell, might as well add one more while we're at it.

Disgusting how many stacked boxes we saw and couldn't take advantage of. Instead we tried running into it time and time again. And when it was a pass, the run blitzes turned into pass blitzes and we failed anyways.
I'm hoping the ZBS helps some in that there is no predetermined hole. Also, having Torrey smith should back up a safety for a change.
not having roman will help, though everything was ok'd by the head of the rattlesnake at the time

So with our personnel, these fatties from the power run scheme (buh-bye Iupati) are going to have to slim down, get in shape, do some cardio, be able to move quickly from 3-4-point stance, rise quickly, block on the move in a zone, drop down and block at the next level, etc. Technique will be critical. As to personnel, I have a feeling we'll see some changes in the lineup (blocking in a ZBS includes the TE's as well):
H-Back: Derek Carrier
TE: Vernon Davis; Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek, Asante Cleveland & Xavier Grimble
FB: Bruce Miller; Trey Millard
LOT: Joe Staley; Erik Pears
ROT: Anthony Davis; Chris Martin & Fou Fonoti
LG: Brandon Thomas/Marcus Martin; & Andrew Tiller
RG: Alex Boone; Joe Looney
C: Daniel Kilgore/Marcus Martin; Dillon Farrell
WRATH is one of our resident OL experts and he's had some great thoughts on ideal personnel and why they would fit best.
i personally hope martin gets the nod at center. he was great in college. and kilgore was not anything special
