For example, if 9 guys are on LOS, and stay there, well, that isn't the time to call a long developing 7 or 9 step drop pass. Yet , that was exactly what HaRo did last yr. I expect to see a lot more inspired playcalling this yr, if for no other reason than JT, Geep , got to see what that kind of idiocy got us last yr. Hence, if the line isn't exactly what we want, good playcalling can sure help out there. In a way, it is coaching away from your weakness....something all great coaches have done for decades. Not us the last 3 yrs tho. HaRo had blinders on and if they called a 7 stepper with 10 guys on LOS, well , that was the playcall.

I honestly do NOT think that is going to be our problem this yr. So if playcalling takes into account what the D is doing, then even with a less than sterling OL, we should still be ok. I just don't believe the lessons to be learned the last 3 yrs of abysmal playcalling are going to be ignored. Better playcalling can aid an OL that isn't top flite. I still think our OL has a shot at being better than last yr....and if not at runblocking then certainly at pass pro. But that means the playcalls better be way improved from last yr, and that is what I am betting on.

More good injury news:

"Last year I took it upon myself to focus on film study," Thomas said. "That was a major part because I knew I wasn't going to be able to get out there on the field. Film room was a big part for me and especially the weight room. I got my legs stronger and I'm just ready to go."

What kind of a lineman will 49ers fans see in Thomas?

The draft profile of Thomas by Nolan Nawrocki of NFL.com notes that Thomas has long arms (34¾ inches) and big hands (10½ inches), who uses both to his advantage. "Strong-handed puncher with good grip strength once he latches on," wrote Nawrocki. "Athletic, efficient mover. Light on his feet."

Nawrocki noted that Thomas improved ever year at Clemson – where he played both guard and tackleand is projected in the pros to be "a long-term fixture at left guard."

Beginning Saturday, the 49ers hope that projection -- and their gamble -- turns out to be on the money.

This has me believing Boone will be moved back to RG or possibly, RT and they were using the OTA's to work him in on the left side just in case (proactive) Staley went down.
NC, what was his injury again ?
^^NC...Been thinking this as well! They move Boone to RT and increase flexibility across the line! The one thing I read about Thomas during the draft was that he had to become stronger in his lower body, which he singled out as the area he worked on over the past year!

Not sure how Boone is not already installed as the RT.

The All-ACL team IIRC.

Yeah, good stuff all around. This line has a lot of talent if Staley and Boone are at T and then with the youth inside with Thomas - Kilgore - Martin. Plus don't underestimate these guys in a ZBS: Looney (excellent pull-G and played well at C late last year), Dillon (G and C) and Tiller. Plus with Trenton Brown and Silberman, we may not be as thin as we think. But that's just talent and upside...it still has to be realized and come together as one cohesive unit.

+1

Put him at RT. If he succeeds, extend him in the middle of the season.

The only thing that scares me is that if he turns out to be pro-bowl caliber, you know he's going to hold out the year after. He's just that kind of guy. Good for him, bad for us.

Oh for sure...he won't make it easy no doubt. That said, let's cross that bridge, when and if we get there. We're in great cap space either way but I'm still waiting for the MB/MM report, "Of note, Boone 'started' at RT today."

Didn't Tomsula say Boone was at LG today?

If he prices himself out of our market there is always the draft! The team is young at almost every position so taking an OT high would be acceptable. Finding one might be difficult though.
