^^NC...Been thinking this as well! They move Boone to RT and increase flexibility across the line! The one thing I read about Thomas during the draft was that he had to become stronger in his lower body, which he singled out as the area he worked on over the past year!

Not sure how Boone is not already installed as the RT.

+1

Put him at RT. If he succeeds, extend him in the middle of the season.

The only thing that scares me is that if he turns out to be pro-bowl caliber, you know he's going to hold out the year after. He's just that kind of guy. Good for him, bad for us.

Maybe not.

If he turns out to be Pro-Bowl caliber and gets quality Tackle money instead of a low-ball amount then I see him resigning.

Oh for sure...he won't make it easy no doubt. That said, let's cross that bridge, when and if we get there. We're in great cap space either way but I'm still waiting for the MB/MM report, "Of note, Boone 'started' at RT today."

If he prices himself out of our market there is always the draft! The team is young at almost every position so taking an OT high would be acceptable. Finding one might be difficult though.

Agree AND

Thomas may have what it takes to be a Tackle since he played that position well in college against some tough competition.
So it looks like we go into camp looking like this:

Staley Boone Looney MM/Thomas Pears

Championship!

Didn't Tomsula say Boone was at LG today?

Yes...that quote was wishful thinking.

Not exactly a dream line up. However, I expect it to look very different by the first game of the season.

Staley/Thomas/Kilgore/Martin/Boone

P.S. I sure hope we draft a legit LT next year; someone that can learn from Staley and be groomed for a year or two.

Well let's be honest here. Staley is still a stud and if he slows down a bit, we could slide him over to RT. Boone is and has ALWAYS been a T. Always. In fact, he trained his entire career to be a T and his mentor and trainer, LeCharles Bentley had to work extensively to move to G. Is his talent better than Davis in power? Thomas was considered a top 1st/early 2nd round talent and could actually be better than Iupati in both run blocking and pass protection in a ZBS (Iupati would be better in run blocking in power), we already got a glimpse into Kilgore's talent level and his only issue was power...again, moving to the ZBS will be perfect for him. And Martin with the experience he had last year, his diet and conditioning and ceiling is significantly higher than Boone at RG.

So the talent is clearly there...but this lineup would still take time...cohesion...and be able to adjust quickly in the new scheme.

Interesting options next year. One of my favorite OT´s (if he declares):

OT Jerald Hawkins LSU (2nd Round)

One of the SEC's best kept secrets will undoubtedly garner a lion's share of the praise as he slides from his traditional right tackle spot over to left tackle. He is extremely sound in his mechanics. He's quick in his kick-phase steps and plays with ideal pad-level. The minute he gets his hands inside of his opponent's pads it's time for that guy to concentrate on the next play.

Boone is a guard silly goose. Been one for 4 years in the NFL, all he has really played actually.

Yep they did. Apparently the 49ers aren't taking advice from the Internet at this time.

LOL...obviously! But he's a more 'natural' T. He had to learn how to play G and he is decent, at that. But he has a chance to be a very good T (IMHO). How would he fare as a ZBS RT? Not sure...not the quickest, not great laterally, etc. Trying him now out at LG helps him play next to Staley, get used to the left side, is proactive, etc. Curious to see if that's where he ends up. I can think of a few other players who would probably be much better at pulling.
Is iti safe to assume that since tomsula was a premier Dline coach, he probably can scout the Oline as well? If they keep Boone inside, there must be a reason.
Oddly, I trust this coaching staffs decision to put Boone at LG. I think it's a smart move.

Excellent point. The advantages are (if this is a permanent move), he stays are G, he plays next to Staley, he has more experience than Thomas/Martin, he'll help protect CK's 'blind side,' he's more powerful pulling right, etc.

Does anyone know who 'started' at RG today? Tiller?

I guess if they consider him the logical backup to Staley he might be able to play RT. Or they are planning to fail...which doesn't sound right! LOL! Singletary? Nolan? Maybe, but not Tomsula!
