I am thinking Hurd ends up on IR to start the season which means Bourne might get some run.

Reading through the lines it sounded like KS said today that if Hurd is good to play week 1 they'll be keeping six WRs, not seven.

Either way they're not keeping six on the 46 so Hurd could be off the 46 for week 1.

Either way it sounds like the magic number for him is six, so that's Pettis, Samuel, Taylor, Hurd, Goodwin + 1 more.

It sounds like two of James, Bourne, and Matthews are getting cut.

That's the consensus but I think most have given up hope for Bourne. It really comes down to James and Matthews. If you ask me it's not even close. Matthews is hands down better than Richie James and it's not even close. I would bet the farm on it if I had one.

Matthews can't return punts though and doesn't play ST. They like Bourne for his work ethic and will play ST.

Mathews was lining up as a gunner on Saturday.

WINNAH!

They could cut to 52 and swoop up someone cut from another team to get to 53. If there's a extra tackle out there it could happen.

I don't want to trade Mullens no matter what. Trade CJ, but not Nick.
For the record, I don't want to trade Mullens either, but I think it will happen. I don't think CJ has any trade value. Why would anyone want CJ?

CJ is not that bad - not a starter, but a solid backup.

Not that bad is his ceiling. Atrocious is his floor. He usually plays closer to the latter. I don't see anyone giving up any draft capital for him.

He needs a good OL to protect him and give him time to throw the ball.

Cut-down thoughts:

Essentially, Jullian Taylor is the 3rd string 3T, but they said not that long ago that he's 300+ now and will strictly play inside. This kind of cuts down his value. We also haven't seen much of him. He looked good with his bullrush in week 1, but perhaps he's not as developed as we think. Sensing a Pita Taumoepenu situation. Has some nice plays in pre-season but still doesn't make the team. He's just not better than any of the other guys I listed there, and we need the spot. Also, as fans, we'll have to accept that several of our guys will get picked up elsewhere. This is evidence of an improved team, so it's not necessarily a negative.

Most likely trades by position (opinion):
QB Mullens (would hate it though), RB Wilson, TE Dwelley, WR Bourne, OL Garnett, DL Givens, LB Lee, CB Williams, S Harris.

After McKinnon Goes on IR:
I think after McKinnon goes on IR, any number of players could get that last spot. New OL? Extra DL like Givens or Taylor? Or the seemingly less probable scenario of a fifth safety like Colbert or Harris? If we keep 3 QB or 4 RB, they would make the initial 53 due to us not wanting to lose them on waivers. So I'm taking a close look at veteran OL (Young), veteran WR (Matthews), or veteran TE (Toilolo).

My 53 Man Roster Projection

Quarterback (3)

Jimmy G
Nick Mullens
C.J Beathard

I hope we move on from Beathard, either a trade or even cutting him. Mullens is so much better than him.

Running Backs (4)

Matt Breida
Tevin Coleman
Raheem Motsart
Kyle Juszczyk

McKinnon starts year on IR. Breida is our #1 RB and I think he will have a monster season if he can stay healthy. Coleman is a really good and perfect #2. Motsart always impresses when he gets a chance and is a ST's ace.

Wide Receivers (7)

Deebo Samuel
Marquise Goodwin
Dante Pettis
Trent Taylor
Jalen Hurd
Jordan Matthews
Richie James

So hard to cut Kenderick Bourne I would keep him over Matthews but it seems like Matthews is basically a lock. Deebo looks good as advertised and Hurd will be a weapon if he can stay healthy. Goodwin quietly had a real good camp and is still so valuable for us. I'm not sold on Pettis and it seems like Shanny isn't either.

Tight Ends (3)

George Kittle
Ross Dwelley
Kaden Smith

I really like this trio. Kittle is a STUD. Dwelley is developing into a nice backup and the rookie Kaden Smith has looked really good, impressing with his receiving AND blocking.

Offensive Line (8)

Joe Staley
Laken Tomlinson
Weston Richburg
Mike Person
Mike McGlinchy
Ben Garland
Sam Young
Daniel Brunskil

Hopefully we get a veteran OT better than Young off waivers but it may be tough. Ross Reynolds and Justin Skule head to the PS and I think both guys have a future with the 49ers. McGlinchy is a rock at RT and hopefully Staley continues to play at a high level. We're screwed if either guy gets hurt . Getting Weston Richburg back is huge for the OLine. Tomlinson is a rock solid, dependable starting LG and Person is a solid RG who is very versatile and that makes him so much more valuable.

Defensive Line (9)

Dee Ford
Deforest Buckner
Arik Armstead
Nick Bosa
Solomon Thomas
Shane Day
Ronald Blair
D.J Jones
Julian Taylor

Deepest position on the team. That's why losing Street didn't even hurt and at least we can stash him for another year. Though he was looking really good. Damontre Moore had a heck of a pre season but again with the depth here it is tough to keep him. If he was 4-5 years younger he would stick for sure. Will we ever have Dee Ford and Bosa on the field together 🙏🙏

Linebackers (6)

Kwon Alexander
Fred Warner
Dre Greenlaw
Azeez Al-Shaair
Mark Nezechora
David Mayo

Glad we moved on from Malcolm Smith. Dre Greenlaw flat out beat him out and I love the young LB's we have with the addition of Kwon Alexander. The undrafted rookie Al-Shaair has been a pre season standout and we can't risk losing him trying to get him on the practice squad. Mayo sticks because of his special teams value. Very tough call between Nezechora and Elijah Lee. Could go either way.

Defensive Backs (10)

Richard Sherman
Ahkello Witherspoon
Jason Verrett
Jimmie Ward
K'Wuan Williams
D.J Reed
Jacquiski Tartt
Tavarius Moore
Marcell Harris
Emmanuel Mosley

Looks like Tavarius Moore will be our starting FS and I looooooove it! I think Ward will be our top nickel cornerback before he gets hurt. Sherm is our #1 CB and hopefully Verrett gets healthy and will be our #2 at some point. I'm a big D.J Reed fan and I think Tartt will have a standout season. Marcell Harris makes a terrific backup.

With Garoppolo coming off his injury, and Beathard not being any good, why on earth would we trade Mullens? Especially since the best we'd get is a 4th-5th rounder from a totally desperate team. Not worth the risk.

If Garoppolo has to miss time for any reason, and we don't have Mullens? Were not going to win any games. Thats not an option for Shanahan and Lynch again this year.
