Quarterback (3)

Jimmy G
Nick Mullens
C.J Beathard

I hope we move on from Beathard, either a trade or even cutting him. Mullens is so much better than him.

Running Backs (4)

Matt Breida
Tevin Coleman
Raheem Motsart
Kyle Juszczyk

McKinnon starts year on IR. Breida is our #1 RB and I think he will have a monster season if he can stay healthy. Coleman is a really good and perfect #2. Motsart always impresses when he gets a chance and is a ST's ace.

Wide Receivers (7)

Deebo Samuel
Marquise Goodwin
Dante Pettis
Trent Taylor
Jalen Hurd
Jordan Matthews
Richie James

So hard to cut Kenderick Bourne I would keep him over Matthews but it seems like Matthews is basically a lock. Deebo looks good as advertised and Hurd will be a weapon if he can stay healthy. Goodwin quietly had a real good camp and is still so valuable for us. I'm not sold on Pettis and it seems like Shanny isn't either.

Tight Ends (3)

George Kittle
Ross Dwelley
Kaden Smith

I really like this trio. Kittle is a STUD. Dwelley is developing into a nice backup and the rookie Kaden Smith has looked really good, impressing with his receiving AND blocking.

Offensive Line (8)

Joe Staley
Laken Tomlinson
Weston Richburg
Mike Person
Mike McGlinchy
Ben Garland
Sam Young
Daniel Brunskil

Hopefully we get a veteran OT better than Young off waivers but it may be tough. Ross Reynolds and Justin Skule head to the PS and I think both guys have a future with the 49ers. McGlinchy is a rock at RT and hopefully Staley continues to play at a high level. We're screwed if either guy gets hurt . Getting Weston Richburg back is huge for the OLine. Tomlinson is a rock solid, dependable starting LG and Person is a solid RG who is very versatile and that makes him so much more valuable.

Defensive Line (9)

Dee Ford
Deforest Buckner
Arik Armstead
Nick Bosa
Solomon Thomas
Shane Day
Ronald Blair
D.J Jones
Julian Taylor

Deepest position on the team. That's why losing Street didn't even hurt and at least we can stash him for another year. Though he was looking really good. Damontre Moore had a heck of a pre season but again with the depth here it is tough to keep him. If he was 4-5 years younger he would stick for sure. Will we ever have Dee Ford and Bosa on the field together 🙏🙏

Linebackers (6)

Kwon Alexander
Fred Warner
Dre Greenlaw
Azeez Al-Shaair
Mark Nezechora
David Mayo

Glad we moved on from Malcolm Smith. Dre Greenlaw flat out beat him out and I love the young LB's we have with the addition of Kwon Alexander. The undrafted rookie Al-Shaair has been a pre season standout and we can't risk losing him trying to get him on the practice squad. Mayo sticks because of his special teams value. Very tough call between Nezechora and Elijah Lee. Could go either way.

Defensive Backs (10)

Richard Sherman
Ahkello Witherspoon
Jason Verrett
Jimmie Ward
K'Wuan Williams
D.J Reed
Jacquiski Tartt
Tavarius Moore
Marcell Harris
Emmanuel Mosley

Looks like Tavarius Moore will be our starting FS and I looooooove it! I think Ward will be our top nickel cornerback before he gets hurt. Sherm is our #1 CB and hopefully Verrett gets healthy and will be our #2 at some point. I'm a big D.J Reed fan and I think Tartt will have a standout season. Marcell Harris makes a terrific backup.

Specialist (3)
Robbie Gould
Mitch Wishnowsky
Colin Holba

Nice work, print it...

Agree.

Mullens gets traded to Denver. Richie James will be brought back after Jet goes on IR.

You have to cut a vested veteran, not a guy like James, as he goes though waivers, and we'd lose him. So in your case someone like Moore, Toilolo would do.

For the record, I don't want to trade Mullens either, but I think it will happen. I don't think CJ has any trade value. Why would anyone want CJ?

CJ is not that bad - not a starter, but a solid backup.

Not that bad is his ceiling. Atrocious is his floor. He usually plays closer to the latter. I don't see anyone giving up any draft capital for him.

He needs a good OL to protect him and give him time to throw the ball.

CJ had his chance and still f**ked up. Mullens can be a potential starter... why trade a potential starter? When you know you ain't getting a 1st or 2nd round pick because Nick doesn't have enough games in.

Besides, even if someone wanted to give a 2nd rd pick... I'd still want to pass on that. I just feel QBs are too important. Ones who actually show potential.
Also.. I thought Malcolm Smith was playing well this preseason...are we saving money by cutting him? Always good to have a vet finally healthy.. especially if you already wasted hella money on him.

$1,337,500 saved by cutting Smith.

Still don't understand how Adrian Colbert has fell this far off... he had one bad season like most of our defense last year. Hell even the usually reliable Tartt looked just as bad. Imo felt it was too much pressure on our secondary to cover and tackle with no pressure from our non existant pass rush. They tried to do too much. EVERYONE was bad at tackling last year...taking bad angles...etc.

Seems so weird that Jimmy Ward is being trusted to be on this team over Colbert. I know he can "play" nickel... but dude has been burt for most of his career and can't stay healthy.

The ONLY time he looked consistent on the field is when our coaches had him play on the outside as a starter. I swear I don't understand why Shanny/Saleh forced him back inside or at Safety...when he once again showed he can't play those positions well. Should have kept him outside or put him back there.

SS 36 Marcell Harris

NOTES:
1. In order for Jerick McKinnon to be placed on injured reserve, and be allowed to return 8 games later, the 49ers must have him on their initial 53-man roster, which means they will release a vested veteran, someone like Damontre Moore, or Levine Toilolo, and being that player back the next day when McKinnon is officially placed on IR. The reasoning for a vested veteran is because they don't go though waivers, meaning they're free to sign with anyone, but the 49ers will have an agreement with that player to re-sign them the next day.

2. I went with Daniel Brunskill over Sam Young as he can play both Guard and Tackle, and was the first offensive lineman in during the Chiefs game, giving him the edge in my opinion.

3. Even though Mark Nzeocha is guaranteed a good amount, I went with Elijah Lee and Azeez Al-Shaair as backups over him, due to versatility.

4. It's unfortunate about Kentavius Street, and while he was having a great preseason, the team is loaded, which also means they likely won't deal Armstead.

5. I went with 7 WRs, I doubt Hurd's injury will require him to go on IR, same with Taylor's, so 7 WRs is needed.

FEARLESS FORECAST!

Speight goes to the practice squad. And, at some point, Shanny-Lynch trades Beathard, provided they get the right offer from a team hungry for a QB.

As for AB's predictions, I like most of them. The only thing I disagree with is Marcell Harris. I think he makes the final 53.
Alright @NCommand, you convinced me

[player] - on IR either for 8 games or full year, won't count against 53.

QB (3): Garoppolo, Mullens -- Beathard traded for a conditional 2021 6th/7th round pick
RB (4): Breida, Coleman, [McKinnon], Mostert
FB (1): Juszczyk
WR (6): Goodwin, Pettis, Deebo, Hurd, [Taylor], James, Matthews -- Bourne is the odd man out, once Taylor gets back, they may cut James/Matthews or someone else
TE (3): Kittle, Toilolo, Dwelley
OL (8): Staley, McGlinchey, [Coleman], Young, Tomlinson, Richburg, Person, Garland, Brunskill
DL (10): Bosa, Ford, Buckner, Armstead, Thomas, Day, Jones, Blair, Moore, Taylor, [Street]
LB (6): Warner, Alexander, Greenlaw, Mayo, Al-Shaair, Lee
CB (6): Sherman, Witherspoon, Verrett, Williams, Reed, Moseley, [Harris]
S (4): Tartt, Moore, Ward, Colbert -- They go with Colbert over Exum (toss up in my opinion)
ST(3): Gould, Wishnowsky, Holba

Edit-- just saw that McKinnon had another setback, going onto IR for return. That means Elijah Lee makes it...

If Garoppolo has to miss time for any reason, and we don't have Mullens? Were not going to win any games. Thats not an option for Shanahan and Lynch again this year.

If JG goes down, the season is over. Mullens would win a handful of games, that's all. He wouldn't lead us to the playoffs.

Makes sense, I probably should have went with Toilolo to be safe. But I still think James would likely make it through waivers. There's a reason why we needed to upgrade the WR position. James' ST ability is his biggest selling point.
