Great post Phoenix, I guess that's one way of looking at it.

I just wonder why this isn't working with Pettis & Goodwin?

Difference in skillsets. Ball skills and vision are a thing, like why Trent Richardson flushed out of the NFL. Goodwin is more of a pure speed guy, not super skilled as a receiver. Pettis has the talent but there's something above the neck that seems to be limiting him. In anycase, Aiyuk shows a lot more aggressiveness and physicality than Pettis ever did in college.

Then we have a problem in evaluating WR's? So is it Lynch or Shanahan?

I mean we not only grabbed Goodwin in free agency, we extended his contract. Same person also moved up to draft Pettis in round 2.

Goodwin (F/A), Sanders (F/A), Pettis, James, Deebo, Trent Taylor, Hurd, and Benjamin (F/A).

Now we move up to draft Aiyuk in round 1 and you believe we got it right?

I hope so

It took Lynch and Kyle 3 years to transform the team from drafting second to drafting second to last and you still don't trust them on drafting the right players?
Man I want this kid to rock the 81

Question on Pac-12. My biggest concern of drafting Pettis was his tape never had anybody physically challenged him, free releases and some of the worst coverage I've ever seen...got to the NFL and curled up in the fetal position.

Was Aiyuk challenged hard? Much better tape? No physicality concerns?

He's more Deebo than Pettis when it comes to toughness.

That's good because the X demands that.

Well if there's a flaw to Aiyuk's draft stock its 100% the lack of competition and lack of production against good competition. Numbers in parantheses are pass defense rankings, 130 is the worst in the league.

His best numbers came from Kent State, Sac St, Colorado (123), Washington State (114), Oregon State (117) and Oregon (53). He also played against UCLA (129th) and Arizona (126th), Cal (112), USC (96).

Oregon is by far the best game of Aiyuk's career when adjusted to competition.

Aiyuk's competition wasn't simply weak, it may have been the softest competition any Power 5 top WR prospect faced. The 2 best pass D's he faced were Utah and Michigan State were he didn't produce.

Now of course there's a flip side to that. We had one of the worst OC's in college football, a true freshman QB, and our OL was a giant sieve against any decent defense. For example, vs Utah it wasn't Aiyuk's fault he didn't produce, Utah's DL completely murdered the QB before he could take a one-step drop.

I think if Aiyuk went to a lot of teams in the NFL he'd probably flop because he isn't a great route runner and doesn't generate separation. I think Kyle Shanahan's system is ideal for Aiyuk because once the ball is in his hands he is tremendous. If you follow KS's schemes and WRs he likes, he really DGAF about WRs generating separation, he wants a lethal player with the ball in their hands.

That absolutely matches the film. Same with Pettis. I was more unimpressed by the competition than impressed with anything Pettis did. Holy s**t that is horrible. Thanks for that.

He might be in for an initial rude awakening upon first arrival.

How's his mentality and work ethic and coachability?

No doubt Kyle will scheme him open too. A lot.

waittttt forrrrr itttttt
At 31 I wanted Mims, Shenault, or Aiyuk - in that order. So no I'm not thrilled with the pick. And I seriously question Shanny for even considering him at 13. BUT that being said, I don't see how anyone can be questioning his speed! I know about the 4.5 at the combine with the injury, and everyone thinking he is a mid 4.4 guy normally. But I see even faster than that on film. I saw a handful of plays where he took a bad angle after the catch, and was clearly just relying on his speed - it looked like he would get caught from behind, but he still housed it!!

Pettis proved year 1 that he has the talent and capabilities to be something in this league....... If this dude can figure it out mentally ...

Mentally is the problem .... Kyle should have known that Pettis was a cupcake. He's a cat-loving metrosexual with pink hair who likes "the arts". That's not the profile ShanaLynch should be looking for. He was a no-brainer to not draft early. But instead Kyle fell in love and traded up to get him.
The reality is that most players have similar talent and toughness, desire and work ethic are what makes the player. Guys like Roger Craig and Jerry Rice had average measurables but had the biggest desire toughness and work ethic. Dante Pettis doesn't have that and Shanalynch should have known this

That's absolutely ridiculous. Just because a person is into cats and has an odd hair color choice doesn't mean they lack toughness. There isn't anyway Kyle would have known that. Especially after year 1. All of us were excited for Pettis. Athletes go thru mental lapses. It happens. Now will he fix it and come in ready to play that's the question. But to flat out rule him out would be idiotic.

Why are we so quick to blame someone? Every GM, coach, and scout misses on more players than they get right.

Geez we have a loaded team I don't think we have a problem.

I'm pretty sure Kyle and Lynch know what makes a NFL player great more than you considering they have spent the majority of their lives around the nfl locker room.

Yes and no. I loved this pick and was excited. The trade up i didnt LOVE but it didn't bother me too much. It was not trading down further at 13 that had me tossing and turning.
