I think we ned to get away from the idea that a rookie QB couldn't come in and have success because Kyle's system takes so much time to learn. JG came here in 2017 and the Niners won 5 games with him only having a limited knowledge of the system. I wouldn't expect a rookie to run the entire playbook but if it's a talented guy with a big arm and some mobility, he could still make some plays.

I have inherent issues with Jimmy because I don't believe he can carry a team. If he didn't have Shanahan's scheme I have my doubts about how he'd perform.
I don't believe he can connect on deep passes consistently. Again, scheme is important here, I think his deep ball metrics are a product of the easy looks he gets, less so than his ability.
Second, he throws too many picks. Every year he's in the bottom third of starters in terms of INT%. I don't see growth in this regard. He still forces throws constantly. I can live with interceptions if a guy is taking a deep shot downfield, but I can't live with boneheaded throws on short/intermediate passes. These interceptions happen almost like clockwork with Jimmy.
All of this aside, even if I didn't have these concerns, he hasn't shown the ability to stay healthy. This was a knock on him dating back to his NE days. Getting hurt this much - especially in an era where QBs are coddled like crazy - is a huge concern.

NYNiner, you are very passionate about this and it's great to see. I agree that based on the body of work, there is no way Jimmy is coming back at his projected cap number. It's not feasible and it would be wreckless on the 49ers part. I just don't have any faith that the brass would go all in on a top prospect nor that the team would land a top 5 pick to get one. I have no doubt with Trent Williams being re-signed and an upgrade at center, the pieces are there to thrive. We get Bosa back, but need another edge, and the secondary is up for FA too.

"Move on he's done" is kinda harsh wording. It is more like "move on he isn't worth the 27M cap hit"

I'll repeat that once a team sours on a player he's usually toast. The same for when the fans turn on him. Very hard to get out of that doghouse.

1. Restructure his contract.
2. Draft a really good mobile QB who is accurate.
3. Fix the OL, nobody can throw behind it.
4. Draft a Julio Jones/DK Metcalf Wr to put with Deebo and Aiyuk.

Lynch: Hey Bill you want Jimmy back?
Belichick: How much?
Lynch: I'll take it

IF we let Grappy walk, then we are just repeating the Baltimore Dilfer Mistake all over again.
I say another year for both he and Shanny

More receivers is not the answer to Jimmys struggles.

I'm still rolling with Jimmy G.
I know it is not a popular choice and it broke my heart when Steve Young even said he is done (Young is my fav all time athlete) but I just can't let it go.
And I really don't want to go back to a rebuild.

Either invest in the offensive line, and make it like Dallas' line used to be, so JG can stand behind a wall. Or, get a mobile QB who can deal with a bad offensive line via his ability to escape. There isn't enough money or draft picks to do both

Jimmy G is what he is at this point. He doesn't throw the ball away enough instead of taking sacks, he is almost a zero threat to run, he throws too many dumb/risky interceptions, and he seems to get injured a lot. That said he seems to have the team behind him and has had some really great games.
Draft a young QB and get him ready is my feeling.

I'm still in on Jimmy, but if KS is not then I guess it's a moot point. I think folks need to be careful what they wish for though. Should also remember some of the QBs KS has been enamored with in the past along with his HC record without JG.
