Salary is only half of the issue. If we keep Jimmy as a back up, how will it affect the locker room?

As long as Trey plays well, it'll be alright, IMO.

No, dude's gotta go. The moment Lance tosses a INT or making a rookie mistake you're gonna have teammates and fans questioning not playing Jimmy.

Lance should be allowed to make those young mistakes without having that s**t breathing down his back...most cases that hurts a young QB not help them.

Jimmy needs to go play football somewhere else...as soon as SF moved up for a QB, he was playing on borrowed time to begin with.

You mean the way Jimmy played last year??

So what the guy that got SF to the SB and NFCC is now the backup lol. Yeah see how well that goes once Lance has his rookie bumps in the road. It's stupid to even think that's a fair way to go about it for either QB.

Jimmy needs to go start somewhere else and Lance needs the FULL support of the team, staff, and fan base to grow and become the guy he was drafted to be. Let's not even talk about players looking at a $27M backup player on the roster and feeling like they're not prioritizing where they should invest.

I know because a 22 yr old player who's on a rookie contract and has 2 random NFL starts under his belt, is totally the same as a 4 yr starter who is making 3x as much money. Why is context not applied man?

Were 49er fans booing Jimmy off the field when he made some mistakes early in his time here? Nope not really. I was a huge supporter of trading for Jimmy (go back and look). I was never Jimmy was the awful early on. I still don't think he's awful, but his time has come here and that decision was made the moment they moved up in the draft.

I agree, he needs to be somewhere else.

Yep. Just not feasible to have a functioning locker room if Jimmy is #2 and Trey struggles. Hell even if Trey does well it would be tough to have a functioning locker room with Jimmy there as #2 making huge bank while other players aren't.
He'll be the highest paid back-up In the League. Might as well get use to It.

agreed to what? Jimmy had s**t given to him lol. What competition did he have when he got to SF? Dude played a game and a half prior to coming here...played 5 pointless games end of the year, got given one of the biggest QB contracts at the time and never had anyone worth a damn behind him to "push him" at all.

The moment SF moved up for a QB, Jimmy's time here was all but done. He got one year of SF being his team from OTAs on. That was always the plan, now it's not his team and there's a s**t ton of things pointing that out.

When you have a QB competition, you don't have a legit starter to begin with. Can you name me a true legit NFL starting QB that had to compete to be a starter in the off season? No you can't because that's not how it works at that position.

I just think Trey can handle it, if Jimmy is behind him.

Yup the lack of confidence in Trey is telling. He'll be fine. This is football. Every...single... position... including Jimmy last year has guys trying to take their jobs. If Trey can't handle it, were in a world of trouble.

I think he can though. Others seem to think he's soft.

I don't think it's about Trey being able to handle it. Why even put the pressure on him when they've obviously decided to move on from JG. They don't need that distraction. Between the fans and the media they would be making a big deal out of every missed pass or INT. We all expect there will be growing pains so let them happen and see if he develops.

Nobody is going to boo trey off the field this year. What you're worried most about is the pressure on Lance with Jimmy behind him. A great qb should be able to thrive with it, like Brady and Montana. Jimmy didn't. If Trey is going to be great, it shouldn't effect him.

That still would be much less than $27M.

He'll have to take a pay cut - if he doesn't, he's gone.
Should get paid 1mill for every TD
minus 1mill for every INT

Would be fair

Just like people did with Jimmy and he handled it. It's going to happen to Trey regardless. Our fans are ruthless and brutal and will turn on a QB at the slightest mistake. Jimmy or not.
$0. Jimmy should be starting elsewhere. I'm ready to move on, but he has earned the chance to start somewhere.
