Wilcox was a pro bowl player 7 times and a 1st team All Pro twice. RB is a tough one. I love Gore but I can't say he was better than McElhenny. I'll stay with Gore only because he played for the Niners a little longer but McElhenny was probably the better back. He didn't have near as many yards because he shared the backfield with another guy that made the HOF.

You make good points. I am torn between JJ and Castro Fields. I'll give it to JJ on account of the fact Castro Fields has yet to play a game.
Hall Of Famer Leo Nomellini, All-Po on Defense and Offense. The first pick of the 49ers in 1950, the first draft pick of the Niners all-time. Tough as nails, a Marine in WW2. They don't make them like that anymore.

Time passes and the greatest players are forgotten. Cornerback Jimmy Johnson was hands down the best cornerback in 49er history. Yeah, I know we had Neon for one year. QB's stopped throwing to his side, he literally cut off half the field.

I made the mistake of playing handball against him at the Elks Club. It was hard to tell whether me or the ball bounced the most. I was younger and quicker but he was soooooo much bigger.

It's up to the old guys like me to keep their legacy alive. A lot of younger fans just never got a chance to see them play. Today's athletes are often bigger and faster but the game was a lot rougher back in the 50s and 60s. The Niners had a linebacker named Hardy Brown that once knocked 3 guys out of a game using a forearm shiver. In today's game he would have been kicked out after the first one. They didn't even have face masks in those early days. I imagine every player had his nose broken several times.

No disrespect to the older players that built the foundation for which football is now. But when I'm building a super team I'm going with the bigger faster and stronger players every time.

agree,,, we need old school posters to keep that legacy alive... jimmy johnson was amazing.. poor bruce taylor was billed to be the next jimmy but never lived up to it.... love norton but please.. dave wilcox was elite. and of course you have to put down cedrick hardmen as the best pass rusher ever to wear a niner uniform. no offense to fred dead and haley. your top three wide outs should be rice gene washington and i guess owens.. but for 7 games we had willie mcgee.. what could have been there

Leo the Lion was 6'3 259 lbs. He was also a pro wrestler. I'm sure he could play in any era.

Davis at TE? Really? I mean, he was fast but that's it. Hands of stone and not much of a blocker. He isn't even ahead of Brent Jones in my book. Gimme Kittle.

Bosa over Fred Dean???

Ya'll must have forgot!!!!

Fred Dean over Cedric Hardman? Both were great but Cedric was a Niner from day one and had more sacks and played longer than Dean. Bosa is srtill too young to be on the list. Maybe he will be some day.

I thought Cedric Hardman was on the list.

You are correct my friend
One note about players being bigger and faster. One of the reasons they are bigger and faster today is the improved nutrition and the supplements they use. Those older players would be just as big if they were using those supplements and watching their diet. All you can really do is compare the skill level against their peers.

Do you think the competition and skill level has increased in the NFL in general? Cause I do. I think a receiver like Robert Woods would have been an absolute super star 30-40 years ago. Now he's just a valuable asset.

30-40 years fo there was more emphasis on the running game. Defenses were a lot tougher on receivers than they are now and of course the rules favor the receivers more now. It's just so hard to compare eras since rules, equipment, style of play and training is all different. It's safe to sat that great players could play in any era. They would just need to adapt.

In some ways the competition was tougher for the teams at the top since there were fewer teams and better depth before free agency and the salary cap. O lines could stay together for several years instead of the constant turnover we see now. The best teams from the 70s and 80s were so much deeper than the top teams from today that I would give them the edge. The 280 lb linemen from the 80s would weigh 300+ today.
There was more running and the defenses weren't handcuffed. With all that running the single game yardage for a QB was 554 back in 1951 by the Dutchman, Norm VanBrocklin. So I guess they passed some also.
