I personally think Lynch made a mistake at back up qb who would you pick

Potential wise, I think Kyle believes he has more potential than Gard. Plus at the end of the season, he played pretty well for a Panthers that was on the outs. Since Wilks came from the Panthers, there is some familiarity there.

I am sure Kyle has watched the film and liked what he saw and and wants to see if he and Brian can coach him up like he hasn't been before. As we saw in years past, can never have enough QBs with the long season.

For Sam, its a chance to breathe and learn, maybe even right his ship. If he gets the chance and does spectacular, he will ge a big contract from the niners or someone else, if someone else, may lead to another future comp pick.
To the orig poster-this is another shot at Lynch-as mentioned when it comes to QBs, Kyle speaks, Lynch listens and Paraag makes it happen.
Minshew couldn't win with a SB team

Darnold was okay with being QB3. Minshew, most likely, was not okay with that. Minshew might even be a stop gap QB1 for IND. Basically it comes down to playing time, and Minshew can get that in IND.

I seriously doubt that Darnold wasn't promised he'd be able to compete, or I doubt he'd be here, and those incentives in his contract aren't boiler plate. I think it's even money between the two number 3 overall picks who starts week 1, barring an early recovery by Brock. It will come down to who Kyle will trust the most, not who the fans trust the most, and we know Darnold was a draft crush of Kyle's, and we know he'll have Way more experience than Trey, and we know we've never seen him with a top team and Kyle.

Agree 100. This signing and the timing surprised me. If he's really here to possibly not dress all season and learn, then kudos to him.

A young QB coming off his best career play is going to sign day 1 of FA to be a 3rd stringer? The contract and circumstances make it seem more like he's here to compete

You do also realize that we have three qbs provided all healthy and you may be worrying about a third stringer right?

I would agree with you of you provided better option than Minshew. I'm ok with this move.

He lost twice

In fairness to him. One of those games he put up 34 on the Cowboys in the loss
Let's see what he does in Kyle's system with Griese helping him and all that talent around him. He's in a completely different situation in SF than he was in NY or Carolina. Both of those teams needed a QB that was capable of taking over a game just with talent. Darnold isn't that type of guy. Neither is Purdy or Garoppolo but both did well under Kyle's system with the talent on this team. Let's at least give him a chance before we write him off.

I'm sure that was a part of the conversation. He is still too young to relegate himself to a perpetual backup role.

The rumors of Kyle liking Darnold appear to be a thing or he would have settled for someone like Dalton instead.

Kyle made the call, not Lynch...and I'm fine with that. We now have three young, talented guys that will all compete to start when healthy. All three have similar traits and potential. The QB room looks great.
If we're going back in time when the 2023 free agency started, with all the available free agent QB, I would still pick Sam Darnold as our QB3.
It's not a mistake. Lynch has nothing to do with a player not wanting to be #3 when he could be a starter at minimum somewhere in at least a bridge capacity (and possibly more, considering he's young and still has upside)

Most here could've told you there was 0% chance Minshew would be coming here.

And all three qb's are on cheap contracts. We haven't had a year where our SB prospects looked this good since 1994. We can't risk blowing early games by not playing the guy who gives us the best chance to win just to get someone experience. That has to come organically.

He was picked twice and fumbled twice in that game, losing one fumble. So while he was moving it up and down, he was also fueling the DAL offense with his repeated turnovers.
I was hoping Mariota. But there were durability questions, I guess.
