Who will be the Niners new DC?-Rooney Rule Now Applicable

I hope we come with a new and up and comer for our new DC.

This group doesn't have the luxury of time for someone to learn on the job and hopefully become a good DC. You're more likely to get Robert Saleh in 2017 than DeMeco in 2022 as a first-year DC even if it's a talented coach. It's a massive gamble to bring in a rookie DC.

But it would give shanahan the opportunity to mold his young DC into what he wants

Is the team looking to mold a DC for the future or win a SB next year? It's extremely unlikely that both will occur at the same time.

He doesn't need more on his plate to do. He needs less.

… if its rumors you want, your Mom's thread is on fire.

Nothing personal. Had to be done.

As a big fan of your mom jokes…I'm warming up to it

What about this for Belichick motivation:

To go up against Spagnuolo one more time in the Super Bowl (or maybe just the big regular season matchup this year), to avenge that SB 42 loss?

I mean you need a guy that's gonna run his scheme though….our team is built for kyle's D. So the vet DC needs to have experience doing that as well. If not you're getting another Wilks who's learning on the fly.

I'd like someone older that likely isn't going anywhere after a good year or two.

This. You get an up and comer and in a year or two will likely gonna get poached and take the good assistants with him ala saleh and demeco.
Just food for thought

Is Mike Vrabel even available?

I personally doubt it. I see no good reason for him to accept a DC position this year and many good reasons not to. He will sit the year out and then get a HC job next year is my guess. Still worth kicking the tires, maybe he's antsy to work but it doesn't make much sense from his point of view.

Getting back to the Super Bowl after you have just lost one is hard enough. Learning a new scheme, or just adapting to changes is not going to make it any easier.

Shanahan has emerged as a rather hard driver. That won't make things easier for some guy coming in who needs to make some adjustments in the way he runs D.

Why though? This defense pretty much guarantees you to make you look good (unless your Wilks). It will only drive up his value.

Totally agree. And after this upcoming season, Brock's contract will be in the negotiation phase. So this team should be in a must-win-now mode. Not to mention there's no guarantee that Trent Williams will play beyond next season too. There's little time to see if the 49ers have the right DC for the job. Get a big name DC then let him do his thing on defense!!! That's the way I feel!!!
No idea who it will be but at least we seem to have some good options. Maybe my memory is faulty but seems like last year we didn't have great choices.

Easier said than done. A lot of these guys that are sitting around waiting for the right opportunity don't realize their own shelf life can be pretty long. Look at Rex Ryan. Jon Gruden was waiting in the booth for a few years as well. Guys like Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher have watched the game pass them by and can't even come back even if they wanted.

Vrabel might be the hot hand now. One or two more years he'll be the dusty trophy no one wants to look at…
