Who will be the Niners new DC?-Rooney Rule Now Applicable

The defense was #1 last season and there was no way it was gonna be #1 again this season so a regression was expected even with Ryans and the players that left were way more important than we initially thougth.

-Ebukam is a better edge setter on base defense than Ferrell.
-Omenihu is a better pass-rusher than Jackson/Gregory/Young.
-Azeez is a way better linebacker than Burks.
-J. Ward playing nickel was ligth years better than all the guys we had there this season.

Still the defense was #3 in points allowed (only 1 pont less per game than the #1 Ravens D) and allowed only 19 points in the Super Bowl.

Wilks was far from perfect (his blitzes were awful) but he wasn't as bad as we might think and he was the best coach of the team in the Super Bowl but now that doesn't matter because he is gone because for some reason the players never had a real conection with him and someone was going to be the scapegoat for the mess in OT.
Wrong. All wrong.

besides azeez

27th on 3rd down. That isn't good

That's why I said than Wilks was far from perfect but Wilks' defense this season and Ryans' defense in 2021 (his first year) have almost the same numbers.

8th and 1st are not almost the same

Is the team looking to mold a DC for the future or win a SB next year? It's extremely unlikely that both will occur at the same time.

I mean you need a guy that's gonna run his scheme though….our team is built for kyle's D. So the vet DC needs to have experience doing that as well. If not you're getting another Wilks who's learning on the fly.

Kyle's D? I thought he was an offensive guy. There's enough talent on that side of the ball I think there are different schemes that would work. If they finally get help in the secondary.

NY is right in that this is Kyle's defense. Saleh credited Kyle in helping evolve the original Seattle cover 3 defense into what they began running around 2018 until now.

Kyle started on the defensive side of coaching and then switched to focus on offense. He's one of the rare coaches that can coach both sides of the ball. That's one of the reasons why he gets get compared to Bill Belichick.

That is actually fascinating to me, and helps me understand a little more why Wilks was canned. It doesn't help me understand why he was hired, but I really hope he gets it right with this one.
Johnny Holland gets my vote...knows the defense very well and has earned an opportunity to be the DC. Shanahan's done a good job of promoting coaches to be coordinators or HC's. JH has a ton of respect he's built up since 2017 when he came back to SF. I have no interest in outside coordinators and/or HC's. If you can hire a top candidate from within, you do it, IMHO. It's worked very well for Shanahan & the team in general. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Johnny Holland is dealing with an incurable blood cancer that requires aggressive treatment for the remainder of his life. It's why he's had to leave the team in the past.

Even calling the game from a hospital bed he won't have 6 db's straddling the first down marker giving up free yards.
Pete Carroll is an option.

With the way Kyle left Cleveland I highly doubt Pettine is an option.

I for one want Rivera
