I don't think he was trying to prove anything beyond just giving him some live snaps against an actual opponent, especially since they cancelled the practice sessions with the Saints.

Every coach is gonna have their kicker just boom it out of the endzone on kickoffs. When every well covered kick gets the guy down at the 29-30 and the touchback is the 30, there's zero advantage in letting them return it and risking anything beyond the 30.
