remember merkin Valdez? I went to spring training back then and had a "top prospects" card of him and Matt cain. And everyone was asking Lance Niekro (I believe he was the hot hitter) for his autograph and merkin was just standing to the side. I was young and yelled his name and he smiled like crazy and looking back he was just stoked a kid knew him.

he then asked if I wanted Matt to sign it and he brought it on the field during the national anthem and then after he walked it to Matt and had him sign it. Awesome dude

Yeah, he was supposed to be really good. The 15-17 year old kids they sign from the latin countries are such a crapshoot. They have given millions to guys that didn't even make it to AAA. Valdez ended up making it to the big leagues, but didn't do much.

I remember when we got him in the Russ Ortiz trade his name was Manuel Mateo. lol

That's very sad, just read about his story. Very promising young prospect and then to die prematurely. RIP to him.

No. This is his shot at a multi year contract. He's going for the most money he can get.

Not a chance. The Giants will still try to get him signed to a multi year deal but this covers them a bit if he signs elsewhere

Maybe. Maybe not. I could see him giving the Giants a bit of a hometown discount somewhat similar to what Crawford did. 3 years/48? Will be interesting to see what other teams want to offer for Belt.

I think the Giants will bring him back on a 3 year deal. And the pick isnt a #1 like it used to be so really not that big of a deal anymore.
