He deserved to win something this year. Glad they gave it to the deserving guy. Not sure why Yaz was nominated and Posey wasn't, but whatever…

No. This is his shot at a multi year contract. He's going for the most money he can get.
Maybe. Maybe not. I could see him giving the Giants a bit of a hometown discount somewhat similar to what Crawford did. 3 years/48? Will be interesting to see what other teams want to offer for Belt.

He will give the Giants a small break, but with the game getting more and more advanced metrics based, Belt is going to have plenty of suitors. I guess MLB GM's disagree with Skeet, which is shocking.

When push comes to shove, the Giants probably make Belt a very competitive offer before he hits the market. He isn't going to be cheap now that Posey has retired. He knows the Giants cant lose him. The QO hurts his value, unless the new CBA abolishes the draft pick compensation part.

Before, I think I said Belt asks for 4/75, the Giants counter at 2/40, and they meet in the middle at like 3/57. Now he might stand his ground. I dont know if Farhan will go 4 years, but we might not have a choice.

I would be very surprised if Farhan gave Belt 4 years. I wouldnt.

Eh, his skillset should hold up as he gets older. Especially if the NL gets the DH. We just can't afford to lose him. Hopefully he will do 3 years with a 4th year team option.

I'm guessing no longer than a 2 year deal like with Crawford.
Real question is , is when does the lockout begin 😮

Belt has more leverage and less incentive to give a discount than Crawford. Plus Craw is a year older.

Whose giving up a pick up sign him though?

I think the Giants will bring him back on a 3 year deal. And the pick isnt a #1 like it used to be so really not that big of a deal anymore.

don't be shocked if his hometown Rangers pry him away from us on a longer term deal.

It really depends on what the new CBA says about the draft pick compensation. If that part goes away, there is no deterrent for other teams who feel they are 1 or 2 guys away from competing for a WS.

If a 4th year is what secures the deal, I could see a team going there. Teams give far more irresponsible contract lengths than that. IMO the Giants are desperate to keep him, and they have a ton of money to spend. Posey retiring just freed up an extra 22 mil, which they can include in the Belt offer. We will see. Not sure how the lockout will affect the Giants' ability to work an extension before free agency is official.

I'm fine with Belt staying but I would prefer a shorter deal. I feel like you can replace his numbers with a lot of players. He's a good baseball player but not amazing. And he is hurt a lot. His defense is plus which is nice.

There are rumors they are prepared to give Semien a MASSIVE contract so they might not want to overspend to get Belt too.

Hes a team leader who plays outstanding D and his approach at the plate is almost the model of what the Kapler staff wants everyone to be like. Word from the clubhouse was that as frustrated as Bochy's staff was with Belt's approach, Kapler was the opposite, and absolutely loves him. I would be shocked if they dont bring him back.

He means more to the Giants than anyone else, we have a massive amount of money to spend, and hes not going to want a ridiculous amount. His injuries have been more fluke than chronic, so I don't think that factors in as much as people think. We got a glimpse of our lineup without lefty power after he was hurt and it cost us against the Dodgers. Way too many reasons to sign him back to let him walk over a potential replacement. Plus how many free agent lefty bats are going to know the intricacies of hitting at Oracle Park?
