Jimmy Garoppolo will start on Sunday night when the San Francisco 49ers host the division-rival Los Angeles Rams. The quarterback hopes for a better performance than his Week 5 outing against the Miami Dolphins when he threw two interceptions before being benched at halftime. Of course, it was his first game back from a high-ankle sprain, and the injury was still affecting Garoppolo.
General manager John Lynch said Friday morning that it looked like Garoppolo was affected by a hit from a defender early in the matchup.
"It didn't look right (after that)," Lynch said via the KNBR interview. "And I think that affected his ability to rotate and throw the ball effectively."
Garoppolo doesn't feel the hit itself was the cause of his problematic afternoon.
"The hit didn't really bother me," the quarterback told reporters on Friday. "He went a little low, but it didn't bother me too much."
How is Garoppolo feeling now after three days of being a full participant in practices?
"As far as the ankle, it's feeling great this week," he said. "It really is. Just made a lot of improvements; just that couple of extra days, I think, (to) consistently get better. It's just one of those things you've got to keep working at it."
Garoppolo did learn something about high-ankle sprains, though. He had never suffered one until now.
"They suck," he said while laughing. "Yeah, they're not very fun. I always thought a high-ankle was like a normal ankle sprain. So, you learn something new every day, I guess.
"It's just kind of one of those things. Everyone in that locker room is dealing with something. You've just got to handle it. It is what it is, and go play the game on Sunday."
