San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert was only supposed to miss eight weeks after suffering a knee injury against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. However, he revealed today that he plans to have season-ending surgery instead to repair the damage.

"After consulting with multiple doctors and weighing my options, I will be having season-ending surgery to repair my knee," wrote Mostert.

"This gives me, without a doubt in my mind, the best possibility at coming back 110%. I have ALWAYS come back stronger and I will this time too! I have faith in myself, my doctors, my support system, my team, and God. He makes no mistakes!!"

On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Mostert chipped cartilage in his knee and would have surgery but would return this season. Instead, the running back has opted to do what he feels is best for his future, which will mean the end of his 2021 campaign.

"I'm gutted. This sucks!" Mostert continued. "This is obviously not what I worked so hard for. I wish more than anything I could be out there on the field with my brothers!!! Thank you for your support in our decision. I'M FAR FROM DONE!"

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network added that Mostert's recovery is now expected to be about six months long. The running back's injury is now being reported to be a torn meniscus.

Tweeted Pelissero: "Mostert's agent, Brett Tessler, tells me: 'We decided to take the best option for his long-term health. We expect that he'll be back next season at 100%.'"

Mostert is in his seventh NFL season. He had two carries for 20 yards before the injury on Sunday. The running back is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
