"After 11 straight losses and another lost season, 49ers ownership is open to significant changes just one year into its latest coaching/management regime, league sources said, with longtime general manager Trent Baalke in jeopardy of losing his job and coach Chip Kelly hanging in the balance as well," wrote La Canfora in a CBS Sports report on December 11.
"Several NFL owners believe Jed York's parents, Denise and John York, will be taking a more hands-on approach with the team as they determine how to reposition the franchise, and Mike Shanahan, who has been under consideration for coaching openings there in the past, could join the 49ers in a coaching and/or executive capacity," La Canfora continued.
The next day, he joined Gary & Larry on KNBR to expand on his report saying that the new involvement by the York parents may result in the ousting of their son Jed.
"[Jed York] would be out," La Canfora said about the situation should it come to fruition. "He wouldn't be involved in football operations. I mean you can get cute with titles. You can do whatever you think you have to do. But the premise would be, the top of the pyramid would be this person they bring in, to effectively be running the football operation."
La Canfora went on to state that, if this were to happen, Jed would no longer be the face of 49ers football. Someone else would take his place in that role.
Later that day, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk refuted the report by La Canfora, saying it was completely false and that Jed York is not going anywhere. He also stated that Shanahan was not coming to the 49ers in any capacity.
Yet, even after that, La Canfora continued to stand by his original report and once again went on KNBR to reaffirm what he had said and discuss the Florio comments.
Only three games remain on the 49ers schedule so, soon enough, we will know what will actually happen.
