The report originated on December 11 when Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that 49ers general manager Trent Baalke would be fired. "Several NFL owners believe Jed York's parents, Denise and John York, will be taking a more hands-on approach with the team as they determine how to reposition the franchise, and Mike Shanahan, who has been under consideration for coaching openings there in the past, could join the 49ers in a coaching and/or executive capacity," La Canfora wrote within the report.
A day later, La Canfora expanded on that report while on KNBR. "[Jed York] would be out," he said about the situation should it come to fruition. "He wouldn't be involved in football operations. I mean you can get cute with titles. You can do whatever you think you have to do. But the premise would be, the top of the pyramid would be this person they bring in, to effectively be running the football operation."
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk refuted the report by La Canfora, saying it was completely false and that Jed York is not going anywhere. He also stated that Shanahan was not coming to the 49ers in any capacity. La Canfora continued to stand by his original report and once again went on KNBR to reaffirm what he had said and discuss the Florio comments.
As early as yesterday, La Canfora stated that he continues to hear information about a possible shakeup in the San Francisco 49ers organization soon. He stated that many plugged-in sources still point to a "growing schism" within the York family over future of the team.
The 49ers are now 1-13 and changes will likely take place following the season. We will likely have to wait until then to see what those changes are.
