McVay has been the offensive coordinator with Washington since 2014. Before that, he served as the tight ends coach and assistant tight ends coach with the team. McVay began his NFL coaching career in 2008 as an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McVay will also meet with the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, who are also searching for a new head coach. He has guided a Washington offense that was ranked third in total offense and second in passing in 2016. At age 30, McVay is the youngest coordinator in the league, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.
McVay's grandfather, John McVay, coached the New York Giants from 1976 until 1978 and served in various roles, including general manager, with the 49ers in the 1980s and 1990s.
"He's done a great job and deserves an opportunity to interview and see what happens," Washington head coach Jay Gruden said on Monday when asked about McVay's impending interview with the Rams. "But he's brought a lot to this football team as far as offensively and done a good job calling plays and utilizing the people that we have. Unfortunately, we didn't get it done yesterday, but that should not affect his ability to get an interview or a job."
