Sean McVay, who is the grandson of former New York Giants coach and 49ers general manager John McVay, interviewed with San Francisco on Monday.
McVay has been the offensive coordinator with Washington since 2014. Before that, he served as the tight ends coach and assistant tight ends coach with the team. McVay began his NFL coaching career in 2008 as an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He guided a Washington offense that was ranked third in total offense and second in passing in 2016.
At age 30, McVay is the youngest coordinator in the league and a promotion would make him the youngest head coach. He will turn 31 later this month.
Other 49ers coaching candidates appear to be on the move as well. Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott looks to be close to landing with the Buffalo Bills. McDermott interviewed with the 49ers on Tuesday. Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is tentatively scheduled to meet with the 49ers on Thursday, but that interview will not happen if he is signed by the Denver Broncos to replace Gary Kubiak. Joseph interviewed with Denver on Tuesday. He and Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach and offensive line coach Tom Cable remain the only known head coach candidates that the 49ers have not yet met with.
Late Tuesday night, Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area broke the news that the 49ers had added another name to their list of general manager candidates. The team plans to meet with Arizona Cardinals vice president of player personnel Terry McDonough on Friday.
