Tarver recently interviewed with the Washington Redskins for their defensive coordinator position. He served as the Oakland Raiders' defensive coordinator from 2012 through 2014. Before that, he was with the 49ers from 2001 through 2010 serving as the offensive quality control coach, assistant running backs coach, and outside linebackers coach during that span. Tarver returned to the 49ers under Jim Tomsula in 2015.
Jeff Hafley joined the 49ers in 2016 under Chip Kelly after spending the previous two seasons as the secondary coach with the Cleveland Browns. He started his NFL coaching career as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012.
Under Hafley, the 49ers defense ranked 14th against the pass in 2016, allowing 240.5 yards per game.
There could be more holdovers from the 49ers' 2016 staff. Other coaching hires have had a head start in building their staffs, but Shanahan, who is currently Atlanta's offensive coordinator, is helping to prepare his team to play the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI on Sunday.
