Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting that Los Angeles Chargers linebackers coach Robert Saleh is a target for the defensive coordinator job when Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan becomes the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.


Saleh was the Houston Texans' defensive quality control coach and then assistant linebackers coach during Shanahan's time there. He was the Jacksonville Jaguars' linebackers coach from 2014 until 2016 and then signed to serve in the same role with the Chargers in 2017.



Shanahan is expected to be named the new head coach of the 49ers as soon as Monday. Right now, his focus is on the New England Patriots defense and winning Super Bowl LI on Sunday. Because of the late potential signing, Shanahan may have a harder time creating a coaching staff than other head coaches hired following the end of the 2016 regular season. One role that should not be a big issue is that of offensive coordinator. Shanahan is expected to handle the play calling with the 49ers.
