On Wednesday, CSN Bay Area reported that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was at the team's headquarters in Santa Clara to meet with head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch for the first time since the pair was hired. Apparently, according to Lynch who joined KNBR on Wednesday, it was a "really positive" meeting.

Kaepernick has a couple of options when it comes to his NFL future. He is expected to void the remainder of the contract that he reworked in October and become a free agent in March. That would allow him to test the market and possibly choose a new home. Under that scenario, the 49ers could still re-sign Kaepernick, but they would have to compete with any other teams that may show interest.


The second scenario would have Kaepernick playing out his contract and remaining with the 49ers in 2017. His non-guaranteed scheduled pay for 2017 is $14.9 million. It is highly unlikely that any team within scenario one, including the 49ers, would be willing to pay that much for Kaepernick to be on their roster for the upcoming season.

"I'm sitting in the very chair," Lynch said as he described the meeting with Kaepernick on KNBR. "I'm looking across at the chair he sat and Kyle Shanahan was in here as well and I would characterize it as just a really positive discussion.

"I think we, from the start, Kyle and I have committed. I was a player once and you just want to be honest. You want people to be honest with you and so we committed to doing that...I do think that there are some things that are sacred. We did have a great discussion and I think Colin left excited. We left excited and I think, as Kyle and I really believe, that the evaluation process is still very much fluid and we've only been on the job a couple of weeks and I can tell you we both very much enjoyed being around Colin and he seems like he's a real good place."

On Tuesday, Lynch stated that the 49ers would be up-front in their dealings with Kaepernick. "The one thing that we will do very well with Kap is we'll communicate and I think that's important for both sides," Lynch said during an interview on 95.7 The Game. "Like everything else, I'm talking about that process is well in the works and, like I said, we'll continue to do that and we'll be very up-front with him in terms of what we're thinking and we want to know what he's thinking as well."


Kaepernick started 11 games last season after replacing Blaine Gabbert at quarterback. He passed for 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns, and four interceptions while completing 59.2-percent of his passes with a passer rating of 90.7.
