The 49ers are expected to sign Chicago Bears quarterback Brian Hoyer to a two-year contract on Thursday. Once signed, Hoyer will be the only quarterback on the 49ers' roster so there is a need to get bodies into the position.
Mallett, 28, was a third-round selection out of Arkansas by the New England Patriots in the 2011 NFL Draft. The quarterback also spent two seasons with the Houston Texans. Over his six-year career, Mallett has played in just 19 games and started eight. In those games, he has completed 55-percent of his passes for 1,779 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
Mallett crossed paths with Hoyer twice. The first was for a year in New England (2011) and then for nearly a year in Houston (2015). Mallett actually battled Hoyer for the starting quarterback job with the Texans in 2015 but ended up losing the competition. Houston ended up releasing Mallett in October of that year and he joined the Ravens in December. Mallett started two games for the Ravens at the end of the 2015 season, winning one. In those two games, he completed 59.8-percent of his passes for 566 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
