Cromartie was signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin in 2013. He was waived by the Chargers prior to the start of the 2013 season but then signed to the team's practice squad. Cromartie was activated to the Chargers' 53-man roster that December.
Following his rookie season, Cromartie spent just one day on the practice squad of the Cleveland Browns before signing with the 49ers in November of 2014. The following season, he spent time on the San Francisco practice squad and was activated to the 53-man roster following injuries to cornerbacks Tramaine Brock and Kenneth Acker.

Cromartie has appeared in 21 games and started just one during his three seasons with the 49ers. During that timeframe, he has 21 tackles and three passes defended. His lone start came during Week 9 of the 2015 season when he lined up against Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons and had seven tackles (a career high) and a pass defended in the game.
