For the first time since 2014, the 49ers will not open the regular season having to play the late game of a doubleheader on Monday night. Over the past two years, the 49ers played on Monday Night Football and were then forced to travel across the country on a short week to face teams coming off of playoff appearances. While the 49ers won each of the two Week 1 openers, they went on to lose both Week 2 contests by large margins.
This season, the 49ers will open the season hosting quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. Newton underwent surgery last month to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder but is expected to be back in time for training camp.
Following that Week 1 contest, the 49ers will stay on the West Coast and travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks in Week 2. The next week, the 49ers will play in primetime when they host the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.
The 49ers will travel to Landover, Maryland during Week 6 on October 15 to face the Washington Redskins and quarterback Kirk Cousins, who could be behind center for the road team in 2018. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers were reportedly very interested in acquiring Cousins this offseason but that plan changed when Washington placed the exclusive franchise tag on the quarterback. Unless he signs a long-term contract with Washington, he will be an unrestricted free agent in 2018.
The 49ers host Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and the rest of the Dallas Cowboys during Week 7 on October 22. Between Weeks 2 and 6 (Weeks 4 through 8 as well), the 49ers will play four of their five games on the road.
