The San Francisco 49ers entered the third round with back-to-back selections at numbers 66 and 67 overall. With the second pick of the round (66), the 49ers selected Colorado cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. San Francisco ended up trading the next pick to the New Orleans Saints. In return for their second selection of the third round, the 49ers received a second-round pick in 2018 and a seventh-round pick (229) in the current draft.

The 49ers have now acquired two extra selections in 2018 and currently hold 10 picks next year – including five in the first three rounds (1, 2, 2, 3, 3). It was the third trade of the draft for new 49ers general manager John Lynch, his staff, and new head coach Kyle Shanahan.
