The San Francisco 49ers have released running back Mike Davis, a fourth-round selection out of South Carolina in the 2015 NFL Draft, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

According to Rapoport, Davis was the subject of trade talks during this past draft. Another teammate who was also on the trading block was tight end Vance McDonald.

Since general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have taken over the rebuilding franchise, they have re-signed running back DuJuan Harris, signed Tim Hightower, and drafted Joe Williams out of Utah. Also on the roster are Carlos Hyde and Raheem Mostert.

Our own Al Sacco points out that Davis' release makes rookie Joe Williams, who yesterday agreed to terms on his four-year contract with the 49ers, the only San Francisco running back signed beyond the 2017 season.

In two seasons with the 49ers, Davis had carried the football 54 times for 108 yards and a touchdown. That is an average of just two yards per attempt. He also had 10 receptions for 63 yards. Davis missed nearly half of his rookie 2015 season with a fractured hand but returned for the team's final game and finished that season with 58 yards on 35 carries. He added just 50 yards on 19 carries in 2016.
