Cannon was a 1,000-yard receiver and honorable mention All-Big 12 and consensus Freshman All-American in his rookie year. He had 58 catches for 1,030 yards and eight touchdowns in seven starts that season. In 2016, he had 87 catches for 1,215 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Cannon was seen as a steal after he went undrafted. He was taking part in the 49ers' three-day rookie minicamp this weekend, which concludes on Sunday. It is possible that the 49ers liked what they saw in an undrafted free agent wide receiver that was given a tryout during the minicamp, making Cannon expendable. Receivers that tried out for a roster spot include Joey Agustin (Charleston), Michael Esiobu (Lakeland College), Trevor Heiland (Coe), Germone Hopper (Clemson), B.J. Johnson (Georgia Southern), Teldrick Morgan (Maryland), and Emmanuel Obajimi (Samford).
The rest of the 49ers report back to the team's facility on Monday for another portion of Phase 2 of their offseason program.
