An earlier report by Rapoport revealed that Davis was the subject of trade talks during last month's draft. With the selection of Joe Williams out of Utah in the fourth round, Davis became expendable. On Monday, the 49ers released running back DuJuan Harris, who was re-signed to a one-year contract in March.
The 49ers added free agent running back Tim Hightower on April 1st. He is joined by the other running backs currently on the 49ers' roster – Carlos Hyde, Raheem Mostert, and rookie Matt Breida.
In two seasons with the 49ers, Davis had carried the football 54 times for 108 yards and a touchdown. That is an average of just two yards per attempt. He also had 10 receptions for 63 yards. Davis missed nearly half of his rookie 2015 season with a fractured hand but returned for the team's final game and finished that season with 58 yards on 35 carries. He added just 50 yards on 19 carries in 2016.
On Monday, the 49ers signed three undrafted free agents. They are wide receiver B.J. Johnson of Georgia Southern, offensive lineman Richard Levy of UConn, and safety Chanceller James of Boise State.
