Below are some notes from Monday's practice, which was the 49ers' ninth of training camp, as the team prepares to face the Kansas City Chiefs in a preseason matchup on Friday.
Stanford head coach David Shaw was an observer for Monday's practice.
One-on-ones were cancelled.
CB Rashard Robinson left team drills after what appeared to be a shoulder injury. He spent the remainder of the practice watching from the sideline.
Rookie LB Reuben Foster got an opportunity to work with the first-team defense at the weak-side linebacker position for every snap during team drills. The 49ers placed LB Malcolm Smith on injured reserve following a torn pectoral muscle suffered during Saturday's team drills. That leaves the door open for Foster to earn the starting job next to LB NaVorro Bowman even faster.
"He did not look out of place," said Kevin Jones of KNBR in reference to Foster's Monday practice.
49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh stressed that Foster just needs reps and experience in order to become a starter. "He's much better in the film room, much better in the playbook than I anticipated," Saleh said.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan was not happy with the number of false starts commited by the second-team offensive line.
CB Dontae Johnson had an interception off of a QB Brian Hoyer pass that was deflected by DE Arik Armstead. Hoyer was (unofficially) nine of 18 passing during team drills, including the interception, per Chris Biderman of Niners Wire.
S Lorenzo Jerome is making the most of his opportunities. He had a forced fumble and a number of big hits during team drills. "He's an instictual football player," Saleh said following practice.
