Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Newsom did have movement in his lower body and hands and the team is hoping for the best. The 49ers signed Newson as an undrafted free agent following April's draft.
"The encouraging thing that I can say is that his eyes were open," Shanahan said. "He did have feeling in his lower half and with his hands so that's the encouraging part about it."
The 49ers are awaiting more information on his condition. "We're praying for the best," Shanahan added.
Prior to the start of Tuesday's practice, the 49ers announced the signing of CB Asa Jackson. To make room for him on the roster, the team waived/injured CB Zach Franklin.
LB Eli Harold returned to practice after missing a week with a concussion. T Joe Staley was given a veteran day off. Others who did not participate were CB Adrian Colbert (ankle), Zach Franklin (ankle), and OL Joshua Garnett (knee). LB Brock Coyle (rib) and S Jaquiski Tartt (rib) were limited.
Below are some quick notes from Tuesday's practice, which was the 49ers' 10th of training camp, as the team prepares to face the Kansas City Chiefs in a preseason matchup on Friday.
On Monday, rookie LB Reuben Foster had an opportunity to practice with the first-team defense alongside LB NaVorro Bowman during team drills. On Tuesday, it was Ray-Ray Armstrong's turn to get work with the ones.
Meanwhile, Foster got his work during team drills with the twos and came away with an interception off of QB Matt Barkley on a pass that was intended for WR Kendrick Bourne. It was Foster's fourth of training camp.
CB Dontae Johnson left practice with an injury and was replaced on the first-team defense by Keith Reaser.
The 49ers worked on late-game situational drives. For example, sealing the win with just over two minutes remaining in the game while holding onto a three-point lead. RB Carlos Hyde was able to burst past the line of scrimmage to seal the hypothetical win for the 49ers. Runs by RB Tim Hightower did the same for the second-team offense.
Starting QB Brian Hoyer was unofficially 11 of 18 passing in team drills, according to the numbers accumulated by Chris Biderman of Niners Wire.
DE Arik Armstead had a sack – his second this week. Also with sacks were DL Ronald Blair, DL DeForest Buckner, DE Elvis Dumervil, and LB Aaron Lynch.
S Lorenzo Jerome was the starting safety during team drills and has reportedly been showing great instincts throughout training camp. He had an interception off of Hoyer on a pass that was intended for WR Marquise Goodwin that ended a two-minute drill.
"The biggest offensive play of the day came on a play-action pass from Brian Hoyer to Vance McDonald on a deep crossing route from right to left," wrote Joe Fann of 49ers.com. "The completion may have gone for a 75-yard touchdown had it happened during a game."
