"San Francisco 49ers linebacker Donavin Newsom was transported to Stanford Medical Center following an injury sustained during practice earlier today. After evaluation, doctors determined Newsom has no cervical spine fractures, but did suffer a concussion. Newsom remains at Stanford Medical Center under observation."
Newsom collided with safety Chanceller James while breaking up a pass during team drills. It was an injury that required the linebacker to be taken off the practice field on a stretcher and transported to Stanford Medical Center via an ambulance.
"The encouraging part that I can say his eyes were open," said head coach Kyle Shanahan following practice. "He did have feeling in his lower half and with his hands, so that's the encouraging part about it. After that, he's on his way to the hospital. That's really all I know, and we're praying for the best."
Newsom was signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2017 NFL Draft. He was listed as the third-team Mike linebacker on a depth chart released on Monday for the 49ers' Friday preseason matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Newsom played college football at the University of Missouri. In 2016, he led the Tigers with 73 tackles, 5.5 of which were for a loss, while starting 11 of the 12 games he appeared in. Newsom also compiled three sacks, four passes defensed, and a forced fumble last year.
