James was originally signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on May 8. He attended Boise State University where he appeared in 35 games and started 24. Over his college career, he had 171 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 3.0 sacks, seven passes defensed, and one fumble recovery.
James appeared on Monday's practice participation report with a knee injury. That injury is reportedly season-ending. Should he not be claimed, which he likely will not be, James will revert back to the 49ers and likely spend the season on injured reserve.
