"I was definitely proud of how the guys played in all three phases," Shanahan said. "I thought the guys competed. I thought they played very physical. I thought they gave ourselves a chance to win. Now, I was extremely disappointed because I believe we should have and we didn't get that done.
"Hopefully, we can get in a bunch of games like that and we can learn to win those close ones because I thought we had every opportunity to do it. Just in the moment of truth, we didn't get it done and I know we're all very disappointed about that but I was very pleased and proud of the way the guys competed and fought."
Shanahan's quarterback, Brian Hoyer, has not yet led the offense to a touchdown. He has had 21 possessions through eight quarters of football to do so and has come up empty. Hoyer has one of the worst Pro Football Focus quarterback grades through two weeks of play.
While Hoyer has completed 62.9-percent of his passes, he has passed for just 292 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions while earning a passer rating of 60.7. On Sunday in Seattle, he managed just 99 yards through the air.
"I just want him to get his confidence," Shanahan said. "We haven't helped him do that here in these first two games. He's had a challenge going against two good defenses and we haven't played out best ball. We haven't played it around him. He hasn't played it either.
"I thought our team got a little bit better, especially running the ball versus Seattle and we need him to do it too. He's done it before. He's done it in practice. Haven't gotten it done these first two games but after Sunday night, we all had a bad feeling and I think we were pretty happy this game was coming in four days instead of seven days because there's only one way to fix this and you've got to get out and go do it...Brian's got to step it up and we've got to step it up around him to help him and looking forward to getting to this game so we have an opportunity to do it."
