Shanahan said that Tartt broke his arm, which is an injury similar to safety Jimmie Ward. The head coach said he would be surprised if Tartt did not end up on injured reserve. On November 1, the 49ers placed Ward on injured reserve.
"Tartt, I think, broke his arm, so I think it's going to be similar to what happened to Jimmie [Ward]," Shanahan said. "I'd be surprised if he doesn't go on IR."
Shanahan said the coaching staff would learn more about Tartt's injury on Monday.
Tartt was a second-round draft pick by the 49ers in 2015. He has started all nine games for the 49ers this season and registered 55 total tackles, an interception, and three passes defensed.
Tartt was replaced by rookie Adrian Colbert on Sunday.
"I see him play physical," Shanahan said of Colbert. "I know he's done a good job on special teams and the opportunities that he has had when he's got in on defense, he's done well. We'll see what happens tomorrow but sounding like, with Tartt's broken arm, sounds like he's going to have some more opportunities going forward too. Hopefully, he continues to get better."
