San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin was taken to a Los Angeles hospital following a violent and frightening hit by defensive back Blake Countess during Sunday's 34-13 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Goodwin remained on the field for several minutes after the collision while being examined by team medical staff. He was helped onto a cart and then taken to the locker room, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and then later transported to a hospital as a precaution.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on Goodwin following the game and said that the tests performed on the receiver looked good.

"It wasn't as scary as it seemed," Shanahan said. "He's going to be alright. He's going to fly back with us."


Shanahan noted that Goodwin had a concussion earlier in the season against Arizona but was able to come out of that injury fine. The head coach also described Goodwin's most recent incident.

"It made me feel better when we went out there because his eyes were open and he was talking," Shanahan said. "Not a lot but wasn't out cold or anything. He was there, and his eyes were open. He was just trying to feel better before he got up. I think he could have got up, but they were trying to take it slowly."

Goodwin returned to the stadium and was in the locker room with his teammates after the win, which was the 49ers' sixth of the season and fifth-straight.

"It was scary," 49ers left tackle Joe Staley said after the game. "I went in there, and I heard the hit, initially. Then I ran over there. I saw his arms kind of seizing up and his eyes were closed. It was just scary ... We say him in the locker room after the game. He's doing well. He was smiling. Everybody was really excited to see him and give him a hug."

Goodwin's injury occurred on 1st-and-goal for the 49ers near the end of the first half. Running back Carlos Hyde scored on an eight-yard touchdown run on the next play.



"I'm sure the guy didn't have the intent to do that but guys are competitive out there, and they're very concerned about their brother, and they wanted to answer the next play," Shanahan said. "When I called it, I thought it was a two-yard gain, but they just willed their way in from Carlos running, the O-line, everyone pushing it. It was a cool way to answer right after that."

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo didn't like the hit one bit and was critical of the Rams defender following the game.

"Unbelievable the safety did that," Garoppolo said. "That's just not good. It's not good for our sport. It's not good for anybody. Just a dirty play but it's football. It happens. Marquise, I haven't seen him yet, but he's as tough as they come and he bounces back from just about everything. Hopefully, he'll be alright."

Safety Adrian Colbert, who is Goodwin's cousin, also shared his frustration and displeasure with the hit. Below, you can listen to what Colbert had to say courtesy of NBC Sports Bay Area.

"You never go for the head," Colbert said. "As a safety, a defensive back, you can control where you target."



The 49ers signed Goodwin, who is in his fifth NFL season, to a two-year, $6 million contract on March 9. He spent the previous five seasons with Buffalo.
