The 49ers initially signed Gilliam, who was a restricted free agent at the time, to a one-year offer sheet worth $2.2 million with $1.4 million guaranteed on April 17, 2017. His previous team, the Seattle Seahawks, declined to match the offer.
Gilliam appeared in eight games with one start in 2017. His season was cut short after suffering an MCL injury during a Week 8 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles. Gilliam started the game at right tackle for an injured Trent Brown, and the 49ers placed him on injured reserve on November 7, 2017.
Over his career, Gilliam has appeared in 52 games and started 31. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
