On Wednesday, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch sat down with reporters and shared that the team would meet with Carlos Hyde's agent at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Hyde is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 14.

On Thursday morning, Lynch was at the podium to speak with the media and was asked about the 49ers' running back situation. The general manager kicked off his response talking about Hyde and then brought up Matt Breida and Joe Williams.

"We've had discussions with Carlos all the way through the season," Lynch said. "We haven't been able to come to an agreement, but those discussions are ongoing. This is a great opportunity with his representatives down here. We continue to talk.

"Yesterday, I was making a general statement about all our free agents. We have an opportunity, and we will talk to all of them right down to the wire. I wouldn't say anything is imminent there.

"As for Matt Breida, he was a guy we identified in free agency. I really credit our scouts and our coaching staff for doing that. And he's a good football player. He's made of the right stuff.

"As for Joe Williams, he got injured last year, but there was a reason we were excited. Now, he's got to make that come to fruition on the field. He's got some skills that are unique. He's explosive, and now he's got to put it together and make it happen."

The 49ers have reportedly already met with some of the top running back prospects at the combine, including Saquon Barkley of Penn State, Ronald Jones of USC, and Royce Freeman of Oregon.
